BIG COMP PROBLEMS; HELP (need answers fast)

my friend just purchased a brand new compy from cyberpower (i recommended them to him..) anyway, it was working shoddily from the start. his computer randomly reboots itself, freezes incessantly, his dvdrom freezes after 5 minutes of working, his burner only works at 50% capacity, and his computer is slow as ****. sounds like the worm to me, but no msblast on his computer...i was thinking about going over tomorrow and formatting his HD and reinstalling xp...and if that doesn't work, then it's definitely a hardware problem...maybe. i dunno, what do you guys think?

respond speedily cuz i'm going over early tomorrow..thanks:)

    Return it.

Reinstall xp and make sure everything is configured right and has the right drivers installed.

If theres no viruses on the comp, Change the ram chips or try reinstalling your operating system.

there an easier way to reinstalling XP and formatting your HD in one step instead of...formatting the HD thru dos then telling bios to boot from cd, and putting the xp cd in?

If it came that way out of the store, probably hardware is fouled. There is no way to guess which part(s) are doing it w/o troubleshooting. Send it back, have them fix it.

defected ram chips cause comp to restart several times and cause some of these certain problems, if you have more then one chip of ram take one out and see how it performs if that dont work, should return the comp.

Defective anything can cause random lockups and restarts... and various abnormal behavior.

i thought it'd be a good idea to just check if a format/reinstall would work before going through the hassle of sending it back...is there an easy way to install xp and format the hd at the same time? or do i have to format via dos first and then change bios to boot from cd and then put in the xp cd?

Return it. Don't let these places push you around either, because they will. Dont let them tell you its normal or anything, its not.

I've had bad experiences with non-name brand computers(other than home builds).

I think someone mentioned it above. Make sure DVD is set to boot first (set as primary boot). Place XP CD in DVD ROM. Boot from there. I believe the 3rd or 4th menu in it asks if you need/want to format/partition your HDD.
