    help with microsoft frontpage

I've been experimenting with making a website from frontpage but I cant ever get the stupid pictures to come up on the web page. They just look like red X's and I cant figure it out(most likely somthing simple, I'm just doing it wrong)

    any help?

If you want to get into webdesign, I wouldnt recomend frontpage. I would honestly go check out www.geocities.com Ridiculously easy.

make sure your images are refered relative to the location of the HTML page.
      example:
say your main page is in /webpage/ and all your images are in /webpage/images/ instead of refering to c:/webpage/images/gaysex.jpg refer to images/gaysex.jpg, otherwise everyone who views the page will have to have gaysex.jpg on their c:/webby/image/ directories.

all you have to do is

Save the immage to your computer then click on the insert picture button, browse, click on the picture you wanted and its done. You can't deleate the picture from your computer though, otherwise you get that stupid red x. This is what happened to me when I started using front page. I would honestly start out with notepad and use the HTML code to start out, it is much harder but you learn alot of stuff that way.

Thats what I've been doing. I saved the pic to the computer, did the insert pic thing and it still shows up as a red X.

I can assure you its not gay sex its paintball related

What Jonneh is trying to tell you and giving the line of code as well is totally correct. If you have a webserver where you place the files you will need a sub folder (ideally) named either pics or images and the same on your pc so that when you insert a pic into Frontpage, as long as you remember to actually load the pic files to your webserver then they will show...I have done it plenty of times myself and put the pic file in the wrong folder and gotten the red x but soon realised what was wrong.
Two folders as a minimum on your webserver makes life so much easier the main folder doesn't need naming as it is the main upload section but the second it is sensible to name as I said above as either pics or images.
Do remember that although it will work try to ensure that all your file names are in lowercase and no hyphens or gaps and avoid numbers in the file name, this is because Frontpage likes to have simpler files to work with. A little like early versions of windows didn't support long file names Frontpage prefers simple file names and will work smoother.
Oh and don't bother with Geocities as unless you pay for the space (well too much money for those deals advertised) you end up with free space and a shed load of pop ups...no-one in their right mind likes to view a webpage with pop-ups...ok some free sections you may sign up for like message boards will have pop ups but not many if you are careful to whom you sign up for. Frontpage does insert a little bit of clunky extra code compared to a pure HTML editor although once you get to grips with HTML you can make the page in the HTML view alone and it will be fine. The only issue in general terms is that due to this "extra" code that Frontpage uses you need to find a webserver that actually has Frontpage extensions provided...many provide this at a cost, though the majority include it.

To get perfect help buy a book. There are many on the market, though in laymans terms the Dummies series are "ok" the best book regarding Frontpage and a lot of other programs is the "How to do everything with....(insert program)" series of books. Good luck and happy designing :)

Thanks guys I finally got it to work!!

Hopefully I'll learn some good html codes and junk to make the site a bit better. Does anyone know of something thats good for teaching/showing the different codes?
I havent looked in frontpage for any stuff like that but I think they have a codes list in there somewhere.

              Thanks!

doesnt geocities have a limited bandwidth thing, plus the pop-ups and junk. I dont think that would work out to good for what I'm using it for.
I have the web space provided by one of the local dsl companies and there tech support is pretty good so I decided to go with them.

Well, there pagebuilder program is very easy to learn, and you can do a whole lot with it. Yes, limited bandwidth, but for free it provides plenty, and no, there arent any popups...there is a little dropdown menue, but for free you can register with www.cjb.net and eliminate the popdown menue. For a VERY cheap price, geocities will eliminate the menue, give more bandwidth, and provide a .com domain name as well. You should have a look.

since your question was already answered, i'll comment on a closely related topic:

given the very low prices on hosting and domain registration, i would recommend owning a site for almost anyone.

you're looking at about $10/year for www.yourname.com and $10/m for hosting with frontpage server extensions, more disk space than you will ever use, and more bandwidth than you'll ever use. you may be looking at slightly more money if you want a host that will support something like phpnuke (a simple phpnuke site i did for an old AC2 alleg: www.ehrenguard.com), or forums like AO's (if you're interested in a specific thing, read up on them, and they'll tell you what your server needs to have to support it).

whatever design program you use (i like frontpage, my close buddy uses dreamweaver), its not like you're learning worthless skills, and its fun too. i would also suggest getting a good image program, i like photoimpact 8 (CNET review for Photoimpact 8.0 ). not as advanced as adobe, but its more than you'll need making personal pages. i like to make pages in photoimpact, then slice them up and export them to frontpage to add finishing touches. it helps you get away from the "MY FIRST WEBAPGE" (i.e. geocities) look.

there are many opinions out there if you read around, and i am certainly no expert.

                      good luck

thanks for those links Restola! That webmasters.com site looked great. There $5 bucks cheaper a month and looks like they have more features that I could use. I'm VERY interested in switching to them.
Anyone else have anything to say about Webmasters.com?

                            LOL!
I clicked on it and it brought up webmasters.com. I thought you were trying to imply that that was a good hosting company.:o

plus there only $10/month and ranked #5 on the cnet list
