    Listen to Mango!

He knows what he is talking about. I was going to send him this link when I saw it, until I noticed he already replied.

I always bug him when I have exercising questions. He really knows what he is talking about, and unlike half of the lunkheads at the gym, he actually was 310 lbs (I've seen the pictures, you would never believe it was the same guy, what he did was amazing).

I lost like 35-40 lbs this spring, and while it wasn't easy, once you get a plan that works, and stick to it for a week or so, it starts to become routine and starts getting easier. The first week or two was tough, but after that it got much easier. The fact that you are willing to work at it is the most important step, though.

For me, I used to play lacrosse, and be in fairly good shape at around 225 lbs. (I'm 6'2"). I could run a few miles, used to be able to beat kids on the track team in sprints, etc.

Then, after my freshman year of college, there was no more lacrosse. I started gaining weight because I wasn't working out, wasn't getting much exercise, and wasn't eating good at all. I got up to around 275 before I got pissed off at myself enough to turn around.

Its that conscious decision to actually do something about it, and mean it, that is the important step, to me.

It seems like you made that decision already, all you need to do is find a diet/exercise plan that works for you. I reccomend taking a food diary. I did it for a month, and to me it was a big help. If you are writing down everything you eat, you are less likely to try to cheat yourself.

Anyway, good luck! Just keep a positive attitude about it.

*aww spanks Thor! Thordic has done an amazing turn around and is well on the way of achieving his goal. When I saw him at the last AO day I was amazed! He took the bits of advice and ran with it. Great job bro!

Espo: Yeah, I'm not surprised your health teacher told you this. This is such an old school myth. Trainers and health teachers alike would say such things because the average person might give it a try. But you have to understand, your body goes through an 8 hour fasting cycle while you sleep! If you DONT EAT from 6 on, your body thinks you are starving!! Thus, ANY fat you have will not be given up for energy. Your body goes to muscle tissue (which is VERY easy to breakdown into energy versus fat). So, you in essence, get weaker and any muscle you want to gain is easily lost. Fat is a very complex and good source of energy for the body. Only problem is, it takes a lot of energy just to break it down. Which is why it takes a while to lose it. Your energy cycle that everyones body uses for any physical ativity looks like such:

1st source -> ATP 1-5 second range. This is the BURST of energy that you get when say lifting weight, or jumping, etc.

2nd source -> Glucose/"Sugar" 5 to 30 second range. This gives you a bit more lasting "instant" energy. The body needs this for the next stage also.

3rd source -> Carbohydrates (I group all types in this catagory). 30 sec to 20 minutes. Body uses this for lasting energy. Uses Glucose to help break it down and supply working muscles. This is why drinks like Gatorade are loaded with carbs in liquid form. To keep refueling the body. Only problem is, if you drink only gatorade, you will starve your muscles of other nutrients it needs.

4th source -> "Fats" or "Lipids". chock full of energy. The body loves this stuff because it provides warmth for the body, insulates organs, provides energy but is very slow to break down. When if at all possible, the body skips this and goes to muscle.

5th source -> muscle fiber. Easy to break down, still packed with energy produceing nutrients, not as densely packed though.

Hope this helps clear some things up. I love talking about this kind of stuff if you didn't notice heheheeh.

I'm not overweight, in fact i'm quite the opposite. at 5'9" and 125 lbs, I need to gain weight.

Anyway, I have a good friend that also went on the atkins diet. He's was in about the same shape that you are now. After about 1 and 1/2 years of working out, and staying witht the Zone and Atkins diet, he looks incredible.

His father, who was also very overweight has started with the atkins diet and is starting to look much better.

IMO, it's been incredible for their entire family, who make me think that being overweight is genetic. His younger brother is also beginning to go on the atkins diet and is looking much better.

Weight Training + Atkins is a formula for success. If you're really serious about losing weight, you should give it a try.

Have a serious talk with your parents. Let them know your unhappy with your current state and want to change your lifestyle. Any sort of dietary change is going to need the help of your parents, since they're feeding you.

I did Atkins as well, but do buy the book and read it cover to cover so you know what your getting into. I've lost (and kept off +5/-5) 40 lbs. (I was 260)

The Atkins diet is very hard on you body after a long period of time. You go through what's called Gluconeogenesis. You deny your body it's first and second priority energy sources (glucose and carbs) and give it protein. I wouldn't suggest it.

Mango sounds like he knows what hes talkin about. The 1-2 ATP you get from liftin weights is your buddy Lactic Acid fermentation, it makes you sore but gives you a little burst of energy. However, glucose is like the super K of ATP.

Dude, I am in excatly the same boat as you, and I mean to the tee.

I myself am 300 pounds actually about 320 last time I went to the doctor (but I am 6'4 so I dont look that bad.)

However, I was started to become disgusted with myself also.

I'm sure you have been here, your the guy that girls will talk to and be friends with but never consider dateing because your not good looking. I hear ya man, its totally hard.

There have been many times I have thought about ending it, I mean just flat out ending it all. But then I think to myself, why should I care what shallow people think about me?

I have came to the conclusion, never care what others think about you, EVER. What matters is how you feel about yourself. You seem to be dissapointed wiht your self I also feel the same way about me. Thats why I have started to be more active. I am also trying to get my self to eat less. I would really like to change the way I look.

You said you can only run for one minute rite? I can run a little longer then that but not by much.

A friend of mine told me this, run until you can't run anymore. Then joh until you can't jog anymore, then walk until you can't walk anymore. Then take a break, and hydrate your self. Then repeat.

I am going to make myself do this.

Here is something I do, I go to school at 7:30ish in the morning, I get up at 6:50ish. I have decided to get up at 6:20 and excercise every morning. I know that once I get used to it will not be a problem.

Remember don't give up, I have tried many times and have given up all the work I put into it I have lost.

                          Never Give up.

Slow jog, walk, slow jog, walk. Walking isn't any less good for you then running is. I try to run 3 miles a day. It's not a fast 3 miles, just a leisurely jog. I like it though, it keeps me in shape. Try walking 3 miles. Then try jogging 3 miles. Doesn't need to be fast.

I weighed in at 192 at the begginning of the summer, and last 16 pounds JUST from not eating snacks, and ONLY eating at meals. No exercise plan or anything.
