how do I get this to work? If I connect by active mode nothing works, and if I use passive I cant get any files. Is there anything else I can do?
direct connect and firewalls?

It doesn't matter if you log in or not, if you traverse their network, they can look at everything you do. That's the nature of networking. You always have an IP if using the net, and a MAC address if they control the layer 2 switching. Those are trivial to track down if they are interested.Originally posted by whiskey29
do you have to login with your userid to use the schools computer ?
if you do, they can track you for what ever illegal thing that you do. just a warning
The moral is to not do stupid stuff when on somone else's network, ever.Comment

I guess i should have been clearer. It doesn't matter if you log in or not, if you traverse their network, they can look at everything you do. That's the nature of networking. Well if you use your own laptop, there's a chance they could track you down if they want too. If you are using public computer at schools and there's no camera around nor login system, it'll be harder for them to track you.Comment

if your using the direct connect via win xp, then most firewalls have a built in opening such a thing, probably for going out of their network not in. Make sure you have the right ip address, password or user name.
