I had a ball python for a few years, and got a bit over 4 feet before my mom accidentally killed it. Now I have a 1.5 foot weiny dog!

      ah, Snakes, my forte.

Heres the deal....California Kings are great snakes. They are docile, and relatively speaking, small. They also are not finicky eaters and will readily eat pre-killed food, which is more or less a must. Also, they tend to stay active even during the day. However, you do have some other choices.

Royal Pythons, or Ball pythons, depending on what you want to call them are great. They are probably one of the better pets for a beginning except that from time to time they will be very picky about food and at times, may stop eatting all together for months on end. Fortunately, they are very hardy and when they return to food, will eat voraciously. They are also very fun because they are small enough that you can hold them without worrying, yet still large enough that you can keep track of them. Trust me, if you lose some tiny little Childrens python or corn snake, you will be looking for weeks. Royals are also very pretty snakes and are calm, so even responsible children can hold them. Plus, you can find them fairly inexpensively from a breed.

While Corn snakes are good, I think they are a little too boring(sorry chuck). Everyone and their mom has a corn snake.

To get one of these, I'd highly NOT recommend you go to a pet store. Instead, either find a local breeder, or contact one. The best place to look is Kingsnake.com which is a huge database of links and forums. You can get all the more detailed info you need there. PM me if you have any more questions.

Finally, I will end with a picture of one of my favorite color morphs of the Ball python....Piebald. However, do not start calling around looking for one, they are only available from New England Reptile Distributors and a few other elite breeders and cost a couple thousand dollars or more. They are still very pretty.

Oh yea, special thanks to NERD for that pic.

Yes. A couple grand, to the tune of 10 or 12 for a good individual. At some shows I've been to, I've seen piebald royals go for 15,000 or more depending on the amount of white versus green. And these prices are fairly recent. When the first piebalds appeared by accident I suppose, they were so expensive that most people would never dream of ever even seeing one. So yea, the reason they are so expensive is because they are rare....as in maybe a few dozen snakes in the world.

Some other colors go for even more tho. I saw this wierd lemon pastel/patternless ball go for about 50k at a show in Knoxville.

Kings are cool too, I used to have some. I wanted snakes that could live together tho and that's a no-no w/ kings. A king would be a great starter snake tho, but for some more color and variety check out corns, www.Serpenco.com has the best stuff around, good luck, and feed thawed mice if you do get a snake!

Hahaha chuck, you know I'm just messin with ya. I like Corn snakes, and wouldn't mind having one myself, but like my name suggests, I am a python person. Born a python person, will live a Python person, and will die a python person.

But yea, Corns are good snakes. A little common, but certaining there are alot of very pretty snakes out there, and Chuck, you have several of them.

Btw, Is that yellow I see on your blizzard or is it just the camera? Pretty none the less and I'd love to see it in person sometime.

No snakes for me, but boy do I like my monitors. Not the bigger species, as I prefer the small, but rather expensive, ones.

                              I have a bunch.
