well, are you looking to get a utility or sport quad? If you are looking for sport, I would say get a used Yamaha blaster($2000 or less) or warrior($3000-3500 for a decent one), or a Honda 300ex (bout the same price as a warrior). As far as safety the biggest thing is use your head and be smart. Don't get too big and fast of one if you haven't ridden them before. And usually you can get helmets when you buy them. Dealers will throw them in for cheap/free if you buy new, and if you buy used, the person might give you their helmet too.

My friend and his bro have blasters. great beginner quads and easily upgradable. Super fast for a 200cc.

Helmet advice: your brain is only as valuable as your helmet, dont be cheap!

Yep, I've had a couple of good wrecks where I was really glad I had my helmet on. And as much as you think you aren't goin to ride fast, and you won't need a helmet, it can still happen. A wreck in 2nd gear on my banshee threw me about 20 feet off the front while ripping the front a-arms completely off. Another time I was sliding around a corner when the tires suddenly found some traction, and it pitched me off sideways, head first into the ground. Luckily all that happened was a scratched up helmet, with a wad of dirt and grass stuck in the visor.

Actually I have never wrecked over 3rd gear, 20-30 mph is pretty fast when there isn't anything around you.
