    Happy Birthday to the USA

September 3, 1789, the Treaty of Paris was signed which gave the US its independence from Great Britian.

So happy 214 birthday to the USA.

Yes I recall Jefferson debating with many people about exactly when the nation celebrate its independence. Jefferson (having a vested interest in the declaration of independence) believed the 4th of July was the proper date.....

I wonder why he wanted it to be on the declaration day

Not going to be lured into it. Just offering information on Jefferson's take on it. If I recall Adams felt it should be earlier.

For 1stdeadeye here is a great link for you

            EDIT: DELETED LINK....

I knew you were a HUGE Johnny Depp fan so I figured you might be interested (Yes I am an evil thread hijacker.....can't help myself).

              AM,
Why did you have to post that?

Now I must respond that Johnny Depp is French now! Ergo I must now boycott him. As for the big dumb puppy comment, Let him come over here and I'll introduce him to my aggressive big dumb puppy.

Yet as much as he derides the US, he retains his citizenship and did not renounce it for French Citizenship. Hmmmm I guess he won't put his money where his mouth is or else just doesn't want to pay the socialist French taxes.

I didn't want to start a flame war about France again so I deleted the link. I just posted it because I thought you might find some humor in it. You and I can joke about an issue and let it drop but others would turn that into a 50 page debate!

As for CB's original comment it is something that at least should be on calendar's. It may be, however, that the founding fathers did not want to link the signing of the treaty with independence (wisely). There were plenty that were suspicious of France's intentions even back then.....

We were talking about this at Shatner for a moment, although I let it drop really fast.

But someone I was with mentioned that he respected Depp because unlike most Hollywood types he left America and went to France instead of just staying here and complaining (as opposed to the folks that live in Hollywood and say they hate America). I only half agree with his point, since Depp still likes America enough to come here and make movies to fund his new French life style.

All he did was change his address. Now, if he said he was so fed up with America that from now on he wouldn't set foot here and was going to no longer make American movies I'd have no choice but to respect that.

But he won't, because his convictions don't run all the way to his wallet.
Or better yet, why don't you kill yourself. No, really, die. Drop dead, don't leave a note, in fact burn your house while your little ego is stuck in a bench vice so that you'll also incenerate yourslef and everything you own with it. Because that's all you're worth. You're not even wirh thte time it'll take for the house to burn down, so just kill yourself. You're a waste of space. You are nothing, you always will be nothing. Don't leave a note, you're not worth the ink. - Tyger

Personally I like Depp (as an actor in movies). The only reason I have some dislike for him is because my wife has this strange obsession with him. Can't really complain as I used to watch every single Michelle Pfieffer movie that came out no matter what the plot.

As for the whole France thing I don't have a problem with them. The whole "Freedom Fries and Freedom Braids" to me really is stupid. Just my personal opinion.
