    *works @ a webhosting company*

    j&c

all depends on the needs of you and your site.

you should look for hosting companies that provide the best tech support for you. 24/7/365 is becoming more common these days

bandwidth may be important to you, so hosts that provide high bandwidth accounts, or unlimted bandwidth accounts (such as the company I work for) are bonus.

if you have more specific questions, feel free to shoot em over to me. (pm or email is fine) ill try and help ya out any way I can.

I currently use www.eryxma.com and do NOT reocmmend you use them. They are very unreliable

i am about to switch to www.hostrocket.com which is owned by a friend's friend. I've heard good things about them.

I would suggest finding a site that shows peoples personal RATINGS.

There are so many out there.... and 80% of them are probably no good. Even if it is just a small website you are building, it will be a pain if the company you are dealing with keeps doing stupid crap. Sorry I'm not more specific.

What is an average bandwidth for a small site?

What would you guess, or do you know AO's bandwidth is a day?

So tech support is key. Are there any other features you should look for such as certain options like unlimited FTP access?

how true. and take that from someone who works @ a webhosting company. I dont trust the servers here as far as I can throw them. (while they may be big I am bigger) which is why I use dedicated hosting here. i run my personal site off of a redhat server. I run a small site, nothing fancy, nothing that remotely requires a dedicated server. but, unlike alot of the shared hosting accounts, my site is always up, and I dont have to worry about other domains bringing my stuff down (also, my dedicated hosting is free )

that depends on the site you run. my site, can use anywhere from a few hundered to a gigabyte of bandwidth. also depends on the trafic you get

What would you guess, or do you know AO's bandwidth is a day?

I am willing to go out on a limb and say that AO uses minimum 20GB of transfer a month. that breaks down to just over 650 megs of transfer/day. who knows though, could be more.

So tech support is key. Are there any other features you should look for such as certain options like unlimited FTP access?

most hosts will offer unlimited FTP access. any host who doesnt is a fool. its like having unlimited nights and weekends for your FTP host. can only use it @ certain times of the day. thats just silly.

hosting on a server that is up to standards with todays industry. some hosts may disclose hardware of a server to you, some wont. you will more than likely get a response such as 'server hardware configurations are not currently available to the public'

which translates to 'we have a p2 dual 400mhz machine. old outdated hardware and 512 megs of ram, running 150+ websites on it' you'd be suprised what some webhosts run for servers and get away with it (or seemingly so)

as I said before. bandwidth is something good to have. data storage is also a plus. mail service is even better. webhosts that include hosting your mail in the package ia a bonus. ive seen a few that charge extra for it ontop of what you pay for hosting.

if anyone has any other questions you have. let me know.

by the way. hosting companies I can recommend:

                    hostway.com
                    dellhost.com
                    ipowerweb.net
                    cihost.com
rackspace.com <- geared more towards dedicated hosting

*and no, i dont work for any of these above companies*

                          I like www.doteasy.com
I run a pb field's website hosted thru them. I was having some downtime last year, not more than a few minutes at a time. About 4 months ago they upgraded their gear and I've had no downtime since then.

                            What are sub domains?

When they say "100 POP/Web Email Accounts" what does that mean?

Why would you need "Multiple FTP accounts"?

                            What are all these?

                            CGI / Perl / SSI

                            PHP / MySQL

Can you tell I'm a noob to the whole webhosting thing?

If you have any interest in sending email from your server check into the ISP/WSP's listings on the blacklists.

I would suggest staying away from the really bas spammer hostsers like Rackspace, HostNOC, and DellHost. I think HostRocket has made it on to my internal blacklist for hosting spammers as well.
