Yes, Tool is pop music. Big shock? The genre of it is heavy metal punk. (not sure what genre it is, but it's an example) Britney and Xtina are in genre of bubblegum pop. It's like a jingle that never leaves your head. Name any other band, and it's probably under pop culture. That's why it's called pop.
Classical music is classical, and has different genres as well. So, unless you're downloading like The Chicago Symphony playing Bruckner 4 or Barber's "Adagio for Strings," it's pop.

Yup, that's what I'm saying. (Jazz is not pop though)Originally posted by shartley
Sorry, I don't make the rules here. You can thank musicologists and theorists for this one. In the Baroque period, the pop of the day were operas and suitcase arias, which were little solos that singers would take around and perform. Early last century, Musicals were considered to be pop. Are Musicals considered pop music? Nope. Why? Because of the nice wonderful labels that musicologists placed upon all music, classical or pop.Originally posted by shartley
I wish that there were no labels or categories to begin with. You use the same 12 notes to create both, but classical musicians seem to have this elitist attitude towards everyone else. Hell, even now, studying music that is tonal and linear is considered wrong and unsophisticated. This is on the academic side of things, where logic is not always present.Originally posted by shartley
I wish they were, but they were not. You know that guy that wrote the entrance theme to weddings? Well, Bruckner wrote like that guy (Wagner) and wasn't exactly appreciated at the time. His music now is considered complex and dark, but at the time weird and just too much.Originally posted by shartley
You have probably heard Barber's "Adagio for Strings" from the movie Platoon. Really gorgeous piece, you should check it out.
I think performers like Queen, Sting, and Dave Matthews Band are great musicians and that more ppl (in the academic field) would study their music. And those are just a few of the great performers out there also. But I also wish ppl out in the world would listen and appreciate classical music and what it brings to the tables. Media and culture nowadays has labeled Britney/Xtina music as pop, but that is not true unfortunately. And when you tell them that their favorite band is considered pop to the music world, they get mad and think it's linked to Britney style music. They are in different categories, and on different levels.
On a side note, I think that Xtina has a great voice, and would be good as a musical/opera singer. And rap, is more like poetry than music. But that's a different debate."Yea, well, if wishes were horses, then we'd be all eating steak."Comment
