    Your computer

Hi, I'm just curious about everybody's setup...

I'm selling gaming comps for LAN (shuttle mini-pcs, schweet!) parties and the like but I still wonder what the common mortal uses LOL
bla bla bla, does anyone read this anyway ?

I'm on a laptop, an IBM t-40. It's nice. My desktop is an old ibm netfinity server, I think it's a p2 400. All I use it for is email, aim, and a webserver so it works fine.

A lot of my nerd friends here at rpi are into building machines. One guy built one in an old nintendo case. That was pretty sweet.

I really have no clue as to what qualifies as a top of the line system now. All I hear about is whats under development. I hear it at school from my proffessors. Seems like half of them worked at IBM, then got laid off when they finished their project and it got patented. So they're all into the fancy new stuff. Today, my circuits teacher was telling me about the apple G8. He always makes fun of us because we have no clue as to what a 'real computer' can do.

what? is the G5 even commonly available yet? don't you love how computer companies have all this stuff that they slowly trickle out? one thing that i think is really neat is FPGAs. that's hardware that actually rewires itself. IBM demonstrated a server that "heals" itself. i heard it was quite dramatic. they had the server up and running. and then they shot it. obviously the server went down. but a few minutes later it started itself back up again. now that's pretty nifty.

my setup isn't exactly common. i've got an Athlon XP 2500+ with a nice easy overclock up to 3200+. a single stick of 512MB DDR400. i'll be getting a matching stick later on for dual channel goodness. and i've got a radeon 9500pro. there's quite a few people here that have even better setups. and then there's all the guys who buy dell and such. (haha i actually typed suck. freudian slip. )

        Overclocking... BAH!

I'm less interested in CPUs now... than I am with say... 10k RPM drives and such. CPUs of today are cheap and stupid fast at stock speed. I upgraded my machine from 1400 to 2000+ because I needed a 4th box and kept the new stuff in my machine. It's the same to me for what I do with my computer... I'm beginning to think it was a waste of time to bother with swapping boards.

I have 4 computers. My FreeBSD box just has an 866 and 128... it just sits lonely in a closet running with just a power and net cable attached to it. The rest have a 1.4-2000+, 512MB, Geforce3/4MX/4FX on MSI/Gigabyte/ASUS boards. Two are RAID 1. All Enermax P/S's. All have their covers off with stuff dangling, and drives not screwed down.

This has my 4 processors of mortality....

Now for what the imortals have... can we say 106 processors of doom!??

Seriously though I always find it amusing when someone comes toting their pc super computers. I'm sure that they are nice machines and all... but to call the rest of us mere mortals... hmmmm... Just may wanna think about that one a sec or two
