Good news! My kid got THE CALL for an Army ROTC College scholarship.

Yea... he made finalist for an official interview. So he is in the final group and goes in tomorrow to be interviewed for it. They asked him if he wanted to be interveiwed in person or on the phone. He chose to go in person. Turns out that is a litmus test for the thing. If you chose phone your almost surely out of the running. You chose in person you move on. He did not know that when they called but he guessed right. It' s not a sure thing to get it but very few make "the call" list so we know he is in the final cut. He is the first one from his school to get one of the calls. So it's a big deal to get just that. I not sure he has the math scores to get it in the end but everything else he is strong in especially english stuff. And they have his transcripts already so they know where he is weak and where he is strong and he still got the call.

So we wait and see after his interview how he does. he will know by Oct 15th. He goes in to the interview in full uniform too. He is currently typing up his resume for it. The call came from Clemson University's ROTC program and its for a full ride. Army ROTC.

Much good luck to your son. Getting a full ride college scholarship definately be something great to be able to attain. Allows you to not have to worry about your financial means and just focus on school and to come out of the school in four years debt free. Good luck to your son.

Thanks Tiger. Well its not realy a free ride in a way. You have to give them back 8 years of your life but it certainly is worth it. As that is sort of his thing anyway.

I knew you would be pleased Dave that it was the Army that called first.

He is in line for a Air Force one but they not called yet.

And his plans are to Attend the Citadel if none of these comes about. Does anyone out there know much about the Citadel? You should see this place. It's like a prison to me realy. No Airconditioning, very tradition oriented and structured. Very elite. All Military School. Ah.... the good life! But thats what he realy wants to do. Unless one of these scholoarhips come about thats where he choses to go.

They have a web site. Go check that out. One of the last Military Academies not run directly by the Military but run by military people. One of the only Two schools you can get direct commission out of upon graduation besides the Military Academies. VMI is the other one. If you want to get a kind of feel for it watch "the long Grey line". Fictional movie but still some of the actual tradition is shown there.

cphilip, I was an instructor of Army ROTC at East Carolina University so knowing how hard it is to get a scholarship, tell your son congratulations. Congrats to you also. You've oblivously raised a young man who is willing to a part of something bigger than himself. That is truely an admirable thing to do. Tell him good luck and maybe I'll be one of his potential commanders one day. heheheheh congrats again to both of you!

Congratulations to Caleb. He might not remember me, but I played paintball with him a few weeks ago, I think it was the first weekend after school started. Hope he gets the money, and more importantly keeps it.

Yes the Citadel does indeed have a Paintball team. So does Clemson as you know. I guess you were out at Gold Dragon for the team work outs when he came out and played with you guys? Cool.

Follow up:

Went well it seem. He was told he was the only one interviewed to bring in a Resume and letters of reference. He also studied the info online about their program so knew a few things about them ranking and all. They also told him there were only 20 interviews granted (not sure how many actualy occured though) for 8 scholarships to be given. He was one of the last scheduled to interview. And he is the only one from his school to be given an interview. 4 of them are for four year and four of them 3 year scolarships.

So we wait and see. Oct 15th is the day we hear.
