The best place to have a router is in a centralized location. It seems that the signal is weak because it has to go through alot of house. The more obstacles in the way, the more unstable the signal. Best bet is to put in in the 1st (middle) floor.

I have the EXACT same problem, the transmitter is in my basement and I'm on the second floor. The internet is always acting up, especialy scince it still try's to dial up to the internet every few minute even thouhg I have DSL. I don't mind it that much but any help would be a great help to me too.

I know 802.11G has a further range and goes up to 54mbs. It's expensive but I just got it and the host router is downstairs and works great for me.

er... passing 1 ft thick solid walls is bad... the connection to the back room has to do that.

Get a Range extender and put it on the floor between you and base station. Or even better yet if you are down for a wiring project just run some cat 5 up the inside of the wall to the next floor up and run the base station there.

Simplest solution is the Range extender... they cost 80 bux or so at Best Buy.

Besides the range extenders. I little bit cheaper option is to get some better antennas. Something with a bit of gain to them like 4-5db.

if i have the computer right next to it, which is fine as long as its not a school night cuz there is a printer in my room and there are alot of distractions downstairs, then it will go at 11mps pretty constantly, i can even play counter strike at a fair speed (on east coast servers)
