98.4764% or all CS players are cockbites. 99.999823% of all admins are cockbites. 100% of all women CS players are just plain looking for attension and are cockbites when they don't get it.... so what have we learned? one in 12-957130561305136051630139051379-1357-931 cs players is actually worth a darn.

A recent poll by a website someone in the OTHER forums linked to shows that near 70% or all cs players that have been plaing for a year or more have used an actuall cheat at some point in their career... is that crazy or what?

the game is good ... the ppl are bad. oh yeah.. I voted "yes" on the cheating thing. I had to quit for a whole year just to break my cheating habbits. It's very adicting.

Heck, every machine that belongs to the coders, artists, designers, upper management are backups in themselves as they are required to run the lastest data, code, art, etc. Especially during this critical time where they are trying to polish up for shipping.

This was a security issue and if you read other websites, this keystroke program could neither be detected by anti-virus software.

It's not that they have to re-write code because they lost it, it's because they want to make sure that whatever is released isn't easily hacked. Would you rather have the game now and play online with the potential of having so many cheaters out there? It's bad enough as it is. Valve is dedicated to bringing you a quality title which they hope you will spend endless hours playing.

It's unfortunate that this happened to them as I can understand their frustrations. I also develop games for a living so I know. After spending so many years developing their game engine and technology, it's a shame they almost have to go back and redo something that was almost complete.

So before you open your mouth and talk about something you might not understand...make sure you know who the moron is before you speak.
Well, I hadn't thought about the cheats (no I didn't read any other articles about, UT is my game, never liked halflife), but the way the article was worded made me think they lost it and had to start over again. And yes, I do know how much work goes into something like that. I still think the system admin fell behind to let someone exploit a hole in his system and actually manage to get something in, and then on top of that not find it. Course if they're using windows then Im not surprised.

Yes its a shame it happened, but hopefully they will learn something. And I do know what Im talking about, Im majoring in Computer engineering. And if you want to call me names to make yourself look cool, go ahead, I could care less what you think about me.

Hey Speed. I'm not one to call anyone names either, however, I couldn't let your statements go without anyone giving you another point of view. Because I am part of the game development community, those kind of statements can hit a wrong nerve on me. I'm not out to make myself look cool either. All I ask is that you re-read what you posted and determine if what you said really makes sense. True, you might have misunderstood what happened, but the more so you should double check and make sure you have all your facts straight. You know what I mean?

i think the real problem with comprehension here is the idea of copying as stealing. stealing isn't necessarily the removal of something as in a shoplifting. stealing can also be the unauthorized copying of something. difficult concept i know.

yeah, bill gates knows all about that... but yet the uneducated minions of microsoft that insist bill gates is rich because of his wise buisness decisions never will admit he's got the money cause he was able to pull off the grandest highst of all times. The one that man him richer then rich.

btw from the article I read it sounds like an inside job. someone installed a key stroke logger...? I'm pry just misunderstanding it though.

From another board, formatting got messed up but it's readable, sorry. Guess the guy released the code to show that they were not close to being done, which doesn't surprise me since TF2 is like 3 years overdue.

Thats fine, although from what you added to the extremely brief news story, and what I thought of it today, I still think the system admin is at fault (I never meant the programmers themselves, just the company in general). Whether he is just lazy or overworked, he still should have been able to prevent that from happening, or notice it and fix it. And the thing that really strikes a nerve with me is people that leave their systems vulnerable, and then cry when something happens. Its still amazing the amount of unprotected wireless networks around, even after all the publicity of using WEP.

Guess next time I shouldn't rely on a news story that doesn't say anything.

And there was no way in hell the game would be released in September. What kind of medi did they have 6 months ago for the game? Prerendered images? Yea, I think so. You never hear anything on this game, no new screens, no nothing. Valve releases very little info on the game.

ok here's what happened according to gabe newell. so stop speculatiing and start duiscussing what actually happened please.

Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve. Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code. Here is what we know:
                        1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.
                        2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.
                        3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.
                        4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.
                        5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).
                        6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.
                        Well, this sucks.
What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, [email protected]. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.
We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

                        Gabe

My theory is that THEY leaked the source code so THEY had a reason to delay it cause they couldn't get it out by the release date..

Someone has told me about a bittorrent download that is supposedly the HL2 leaked demo. But I thought just the source was leaked so I didn't believe it was a playable demo.

that's pretty dumb gitaroo. it had already been delayed to "holiday season" before the source code was leaked. why would they go to such extreme measures to get more time? ever heard of team fortress 2? they've delayed that for years without ever doing anything like this.
