    So whos gone HDTV?

Well, the temptation is almost too much and I've really been considering buying an HDTV - mostly for the movie and video game experience. The ones I've been looking at are all about $2000cdn plus, but I know a guy who can get me a bit of a deal on one...

So with that I'm wondering who on AO has one, and what are your opinions on it. Is it worth the money? I know its going to be standard come 2006(?) but is the technology on current units going to become obsolete anytime soon? etc etc.

I'd wait a little longer, because they will probably come out with 'better HDTVs' bewteen now and 200X.

We have a HDTV, big screen forgot the size, but it comes up almost to my shoulder (with the stand).

When watching a movie...wow. It is 100% worth it and more. It simply looks perfect. For the new generation of game consoles, its amazing. Xbox, Gamecube, PS2 (we have these and the earlier ones), all look awsome.

For network TV or cable, it absolutly stinks. You're putting a crap-tastic signal on an awsome television. Sometimes it even looks worse, since its blown up.

I can't offer any more advice, we got ours for free (on loan) from a friend who can't fit it where he moved.

Restola, how long do you usually play the ps2 on the tv? I've read that burn in can set in on some games after a few hours due to bars on the sides.

We don't play on it too much, usually just movies. We haven't had any problems though.

I'd wait on the HDTV for a few years, and here's why:
To actually get the HDTV, you have to subscribe (and pay I'm pretty sure) to actually get the HDTV quality on your TV. And what you see in the store is sometimes not what you'll get at home. And the HDTV technology is still very new, and many major networks still don't have the technology available yet (it was supposed to be industry standard or something by 2006 or 2007 or something). So basically, by the time you would have an industry standard and such and all channels available, the television you have would be obsolete. I got this info from a consumer guide type book written by Clark Howard (local news investigative price guy), so if your interested in seeing what the whole thing he says on it, he explains it better (goes into more detail, I can't remember it all). If I can remember more I'll post it.

I was just looking on Clark Howard's site, and it's changed a little from what I posted from his book. You can read what he says on HDTV's by scrolling down on this page here http://clarkhoward.com/library/tips/new_gadgets.html There's a little more on them to scattered throughout the site. Hope it helps.

Actually, that helped alot Tigerman, thanks.
I think I had better hold off then:

I just have a little 20" flat screen now, and had the cash to upgrade to a nicer one, so I thought "why not go all the way?." I guess I might settle on a 27 or 32" flat screen tube...

I love my HD. So far as paying extra for hd programing it costs me 4.95 a month extra ...so not bad at all. Personaly I love it cause I can run my game box streight into it and use it like a 36" monitor. You definantly want a 1080i or better... and so far as burn in, that applied to the Plasma core tvs.. .the i in 1080i is for interlaced... which prevents burn in.

Now so far as cost is concerned..... the TV is just the tip of the iceberg... figure on spending at least another grand to upgrade your other components to match. No reason to have an HD without the HD tuner or Progressive Scan DVD with Component output. Oh yeah... and good cables will proly set you back a couple of hundred as well.

                      Good luck..

Hmm, my tv was made in 1984
I bet it will still be going long after your 10k plasma TV's have given up

The lure is quality over quantity.
