    the common sense thread

post issues where you wanted to icepick someone in the eye here for not using common sense.

    my issue:

I work in tech support for a webhosting company.

customer calls up, needs something, I tell them it can be found on the "media3 homepage/website" (then insert further directions here)

customer asks what the URL to the homepage is..

you think this person would have enough common sense to know what the homepage is for the webhost they use. they never seem to have a problem finding the support number to call us (which is only listed on our website) but when you actually ask them to go to the site.. they are friggin clueless.

lets see how many people here would like to gouge others in the eye with an icepick for their lack of common sense

There should be a license that is required to get on the Internet... China kinda has it figured out.

I think people in Detroit should be required to take driving tests yearly, and anyone driving a SUV/truck should be required to have a special license...

there are too many stupid people...

oh, and cellphones in cars (used by drivers), need to be banned...

the amount of close calls and near-death experiences on my commute to school every day are getting to me...

              here's a real good one.

MY (then) girlfriend was trying to install MatLab onto her computer and can't figure out how to install it. I go over to her dorm room and try and figure it out and can't till I look at the CD name and see this tacted onto the end of the cd name:

"_doc". I then take the CD out of the drive, and low and behold it has "Documentation CD" on it. THe OTHER CD had "Product CD" on it. I told my (then) g/f to look at the CD's first. She kept insisting that she figured that since the doc cd as on the left side of the CD sleeve/case (they were not in your standard jewel case. but doc cd's are usually the first in those as well) and that since we read left to right, that she figured it had to be the right cd, and that there were no directions as to which CD was the install cd.

I just wanted to shove some common sense into her mind saying "IF IT's not that CD, then USE THE OTHER ONE AT LEAST! OR MAYBE FIGURE THAT A DOCUMENTATION CD IS NOT THE INSTALL CD!!"

I mean, my mother, who is not very computer literate would be able to figure this out. My (then) g/f is a SPACE PHYSICS major. You'd figure she'd at least know to how to analytically figure out which CD to put in the drive to install the program. I mean, COME ON, this is NOT rocket science.

and no, I'm not actually a rocket scientist, but I'm pretty darn close (most of my friends are actually rocket scientists . . or studying to become one).

I've noticed that there are people who can retain information from a book, and pass a test on this material. But that is the extent of their skill set... problem solving eludes them.

There are a lot more minah birds out there than thinkers.

the thing is that she's in the company of engineering majors (who, to pass the tests, can't just retain information but be able to use it along with critical thinking and common sense) and pilots (book smart . . . nope, but they certainly can be practical). You'd think that at least SOME OF THAT would rub off on her. Lets hope some eventually WILL.

I see a lot of people who take things they hear on the television as proof and never question one single thing in their life.

I see a lot of people who try and repress different lines of thought, and in the justification of it say that those they disagree with need some real world experience.

I see a lot of people who fail to look at both sides of the story, who fail to try to reach a middle ground and despise anyone who is willing to do so.

I see a lot of people who hate others who seem to be able to do the above or not do, depending, and say it most be their liberal professors or those darn books they read that fill them with that false logic. When it reality it is their failure to do or not do the above.

Errrr... Yeah, it pisses me off when people don't have common sense... but I shouldn't get pissed because I usually have stupid moments too.
