    Bass players?

Hey, I'm kinda interested in starting to play bass and I'm wondering if any one that plays bass is self taught? I want to start playing but I dont want to take lessons(even though I'll probably have to). Thanks a lot.

    I play the bass.
    I'm self taught.
I'd also be the first to tell you that I've got some serious shortcomings when it comes to general knowledge of the bass... I just really enjoy playing it. The group of guys I play with just set me up with fret numbers as opposed to notes, but I'm working on correcting that.

I dunno... self-taught isn't probably the right term for me... more like self-teaching (as in still in the process thereof)
So you've got an E-Mag, Warpfeed, LX, and a complete set of barrels. You can shoot a steady 13 bps and bunker me like it's no problem...

But do you know where your towel is?

Nah, you won't need lessons. After a few months, you could probably play along to a lot of songs. You're not gonna be playing Chili Peppers over night, but stil, most songs bass lines are pretty simple.

if you are getting a bass, i recomend an ibanez. they sounds really great, are comfortable and are not too expensive. GREAT basses. I own 2 of them and learned how to play on one.

            I:

            -am a bass player
            -am self-taught
-don't know the names of notes
-am starting to read up on theory. its a must if you want to move beyond covering into writing music.
-highly recommend Ibanez: great action, low and fast; make basses for beginners through pro (aka poor through rich); good lookin' too.

Ibanez has a pretty good beginers package:

That comes with a great Ibanez GSR 4-string bass, a practice amp, an electronic tuner, gig bag, cable, and an instruction video. If you look around you can probably pick it up for about $300.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any usefull sites to learn scales from. All the sites that I've found that have them only have them in actual musical notation and I can't read music that well so it makes it difficult. Anyone know where to find them tabbed out? thanks

hmm, i think there are some sites out there like that, i'll look for one tonight.

this is a pretty cool site though, if your learning how to play.
Excellent resource for finding guitar chords, easy to read graphical interface. Including 6ths, 9ths and other jazz chords. All chords available as MIDI-files.

i've been playing bass for about 4 years, 2 1/2 of which i had lessons for. Trust me, you WANT to take lessons from a good teacher. It will accelerate your learning so much, and your technique will be far better. In addition, I'm going to have to recommend fender over ibanez. I just can't stand ibanez b/c they feel so wierd in my hands.

The Fender Jazz bass is awesome, but i think the Ibanez are more comfortable. personal preferance i guess.
