Ive gone a year and a half without playing. Mountain biking looks like fun, but there was really no place to do it around me. I got kicked out of a couple of our nature preserves and now to get into the third place I used to ride I have to climb an 8ft chain link fence with a bike on my back.
I don't have much, just a basic rockhopper, the XT rear derailer was the only real upgrade. It basically needs a new everything to get going again. The only good things left were some nice wheels that I haddn't built up yet. I I had chris king hubs, and mavric? wheels.

While were talking about moutain bikes I got a question. What is a good bike for under $500? If possible front and rear suspension, or just front. I would just be using it for light downhill, and goin places. Someone told me I think it was a Cannondale or Gary Fisher bike but I cant remember. So any help?

No, its a 2001 Big Hit Comp frame.

500 is kinda border line for a decent hardtail. Kona, Specialized and Haro all have good budget models. Of course there is other brands.

            I paid 200 for the frame(USED!)

You are sadly mistaken if you think you can turn that bike into a true downhill machine

Downhill racing was my previous profession.

You need to start by getting a real downhill frame, preferably something with 10+ inches in the rear. And a Jr. T? Weak sauce bro... Get a Hannebrink, you'll love the plushness of 12"

Everything else looks pretty good, I recommend buying anything RaceFace that you can, great DH products, and never buy a Disc brake from anyone but Hayes, they know what they are doing when it comes to discs.

As far as tires go, you cant go wrong with Gazzalodi 3" meats. But, I dont think that they would fit between the arch on your fork w/o going to a 24" front rim.

Have fun in the world of DH, massively fun sport!

I got a Gary Fisher that was just under 500. Its got the front fork shocks and a decent set up of derailers and all. Nice bike for the price but certainly not top of the line I guess. But decent and good entry level. I forget which model GF it is right off hand but its not the bottom most one. I did upgrade the seat to a Gel seat is about all.

AGD, where we are so good we can do it with only ONE tube!

8 inches is plenty for me and the Big Hit is a downhill/freeride frame...! Besides, Im a smooth rider, and I dont have money nor feel the need to buy a 5000 + DH machine.... there are plenty of DH bikes wiht 8 or 9 inches of travel. This isnt my first bike. Also, I have designed, and am in the process of making a downhill bike. I will post a screen shot from one of CAD files.(This will be a true race bike)
Also, remember that different styles of DH courses are prevalent on different areas of the country. I happen to live near Plattekill. The test area for my bike.

Jr T and a Big Hit floats my boat just fine...!

Cant show all of it till Im done construction , in which case I will show REAL pictures. Yes, its obvious somthing is there, but there is some "exactness", and "complication" to whats behind the black dots(also, i dont have any recent cad screen shots, so the front end is a bit different especially the head tube.)

Looks like a pretty cool design!

I had my downhill bike custom made locally, it was a Hairy Gary (you can find his web page if u do a search for it, im not sure what it is off the top of my head), I had a custom tridfade red/white/blue powdser coat on it. It was just too sweat.

The bike weighed in at 68lbs, it was pretty hefty!!!
