The power company around here had some kind of deal going where they paid like half of the price to install solar panels on your roof, in return they got any electric that you didn't use.

PyRo, they have that same system here where I live.
I know a few people that have had that same thing done, I guess it drastically reduces your electricity bill. I might think about doing it at some point.

Nope

Be careful and do all the math first. The reduction in paid electricity from the grid and electricity the grid pays you for may only ofset the cost of maintaining the system. Actual payback wen the system has been paid for may be several years down the road.Originally posted by FragTek

Far better than solar is wind or hydro power. But then you have to be in the right location and properly evaluate the energy potential correctly before proceeding with a system installation.Comment

It's too bad we haven't figured out how to really make use of geothermal energy.
My shop uses a heat exchanger to heat and cool it. Very efficient.

Inform me a bit here, I'm not really aware of 'maintenence' for solar panals. And if you use them enough, or good enough quality ones, you can sell the power back to the company.Originally posted by SlartyBartFast

Wind power=bad. Takes up a lot of space, bad for the environment. Just a rumor I've heard, but if the right political changes were made, the whole country could be made to run off of solar power with the available technology today.
And certainly, however high the cost of solar panal maintenance, the cost of wind power and hydro power (with moving/wear parts) should be a lot higher.

Solar`s cost is all in the initial investment. Not cheap and you need HUGE panels to get useful levels of energy.Originally posted by MrWallen

My comment on maintenance costs was as much for wind and hydro as for solar.
How is Wind power bad for the environment?
I truly doubt that a significant portion of the energy demands could be met with solar. It requires HUGE installations in very sunny places to make a solar power station capable of generating interesting levels of power.Comment
