Who's your ISP, and what speeds do you get?

Ok.....so yesterday I find out that a friend of mine, who has a worse computer than mine, and who is running 2 other computer through a router gets 3x faster speeds than me. Same SBC Yahoo! DSL, and he gets around 150kbs from website downloads. I get 40 constant. From the same sites and all, so I don't think that it's a traffic issue. We've tested different sites, and he always beats me. I called them, and they had me take this little speed test of theirs and it said that I get 318kbs on downloads and 118kbs on uploads. BS! He told me that the reason my friend gets higher speeds is because he has a different package than me. We both pay 30 bucks a month, and both have the same modem. I'm getting screwed over I think, and they just don't want to deal with it.

So, I want to know what kind of speeds you get, what you have (dsl, cable, blady blah), and who your ISP is.

Optimum online is what I have at home. Its pretty fast, about 600kbps on the test sites. But for some reason I cannot download off Kazza at more than 10-15kb/s, but from sites I get up to 500kb/sec.
At school I have no idea what I have, but its hella fast when it works.

I run Comcast Pro and its 3.5mbps down 1.5mbps up.

I pull pretty constant 300-350kbps down. I have been very happy with the service so far.

Since it's DSL, there may be a difference in how far he is from the "Central Office". If he is closer then that most likely explains that.

Anyways, I use Time Warner's Road Runner here in Austin. It used to run pretty fast but lately it's been really slow. I'm gonna complain soon and have them explain why the drastic drop in speed.

How much is that per month? On comcasts site they say 95$ per month, but say its only 348kbps up. When you send someone a file about how fast does it usually go?
edit: i have comcast and usually get about 100-200kb/s down and 15kb/s up.

It only costs me $75 a month, and when I am uploading files to my webserver its about 90-135kbps.

nice, if the upload is that good i might try to convince my dad to get it cause right now we have dsl and cable, so its about 100$ a month anyway, so switching to comcast pro should be good.

Yeah, I've considered the thing about the distance from the central place....But he lives out in the woods, and I live in a neighborhood that's a mile from the central station.

It may also be that the newness of the phone line may have an effect. Even with Cable, there is a significant difference when friends of mine live in an older part of town and in a newer part of town, sometimes seems like 2x-3x faster.

Well, I noticed something interesting today. Downloading a patch for Battlefield 1942, and it started at 10kbps, jumped to 321kbps for like 5 seconds, and jumped down to 90 and slowly moved back to 38kbps, where it's staying at right now. I'm curious what Squid has, because he lives in Conway, and since there isn't much of a choice in Arkansas, it's gonna be hard to find my options.
