Twice now the BBB has saved me from aggravation resulting from the idiocy of some company's employees, and money.
This story:
About 3 weeks ago I made a purchase from Amazon.com. The only reason I made this purchase was that I had a $20 gift certificate. Well I went through the process of signing up for an account with them, picked out my books (total $33), and typed in my gift claim code. It continued to say $0 gift card balance. I typed it in about half a dozen more times, and it always said $0 gift card balance. I figured maybe it has already subtracted from my account balance. I looked at the numbers during the checkout process, and there was no spot for gift certificate credits to be deducted, it simply states the purchase balance. So I made the purchase, and of course the whole $33 was charged to my card.
I emailed customer service and received an obvious copy/paste reply stating "We think your gift card may have been lost, here's how to replce it!". I replied stating my certificate was not lost, I never typed it was lost, and that I was upset they didn't bother to read my complaint (I had this exact same job for over 2 years, so I wasn't rude). I finally stated that they either need to spend a few minutes telling me how to get my gift certificate credited and a refund applied to my card (I included all the info), or they can copy/paste how to return the books. And, of course, they copy/pasted how to return the books (which I laughed out loud about for a few minutes
).
I filed a complaint with the BBB, which took 5 minutes, and in less than 10 days I have the credit being applied to my card (or so they say
).
This time saved me $20. Last time saved me close to $130 during another billing problem with another company.
I strongly recommend using the BBB any time a larger company has done something you feel is wrong. They have to reply within 30 days, and if they are anything like the company I worked at they take the claims seriously.
Just thought I'd tell everyone
