They didn't make a 68 Cobra. In 67-68 the Mustang grew a bit bigger to accomidate a larger engine. A 390 in 67 and a 428 in 68, this was to compete with the Camaro SS which was a 396 I believe.

Later in 1968, Carol Shelby released his GT500 which I think still had the 428 in it and the GT500KR(King of the Road) Which came with the 428CJ(Cobra Jet)

So you see, he didn't actually have a Mustang Cobra. The Cobra and SVT didn't come out until the later years first being released as the Mustang II and then later marketed as the Cobra.

If he did have a GT500KR, which I kinda doubt only because most of them are registered to museums and the like, but if he did have one, it sucks that it was destroyed. That is one of the nicest cars ever produced and the engine was incredible. A 428CJ Currently sits in my 73 Mustang waiting for a tune. With the open headers, long tubes and strait pipes It's looking to put down close to 500hp :)
