I've been playing for a few months now on my friend's OLP that he leant me. If you're looking at buying one than go and play as many different ones that you can in your price range. Personally I like Ibanez basses but like anything it's all personal preference as well as what kind of sound you want.
Oh and find an amp to, cause I don't have one to practice with on a consistant basis which makes it harder to really practice.Good Traders:JoeyJoe367, Blazestorm213, RetardedRiceBowl, rsadich,PaInTbALL zAcH, jwyke. John Dresser, Xas, Darrikws, whydoineedausername

buy any good used american bass you can find that sounds and plays good. go to the shops and play some. a quality used bass is better than a new POS. it will have a higher resale. i would suggest a fender P-bass. its good to start and if you stick with it you will keep it cuz you like it and just buy another bass if you are looking for something else.if you quit, you will be able to sell it for what you payed pretty quickly.
stay away from ibanez, jackson, washburn and the other pretty looking, inexpensive basses. they have a limited sound and you will tire of them. and when you go to sell you will take a beating.
i say P-bass because it will fit all styles ok. you see them in reggae bands, rock, motown, jazz, punk you name it. the only place you see an ibanez or jackson is in some 16 year olds garage band.
buy the best bass you can afford and skimp on the amp at first.Comment

Cant' go wrong with a P-bass. I prefer the American models too. But I don't think a newbie has to rule out a foreign one. The prices aren't too bad.
If you have to get a foreign one, look it over real good before you go take it home. Pay particular attention to the neck. Make sure it's true.
Anything other than a Fender just isn't worth it, unless you are looking at some high end stuff. And even then - I know I'd take a nice Fender Jazz bass over a Warwick.

look, im not in some peeing contest here. i stated an opinion. 37 people on that list. thats not that many. ive heard of 5 of them. believe me the axes those guys are playing most likely came out of their custom shop and are high ticket items. i could be wrong. the last thing i would ever recommend any beginner though is to buy a 300$ ibanez bass. its just not a worthwhile investment in my eyes. ive been a musician for 14 years. im not the most talented individual but i am competent. i have been in a few working bands and i have done many paying gigs and have handled and heard a lot of gear so im not pulling this out of nowhere. i personally have not seen an ibanez that impressed me.Comment

I've been playing on a Ibanez SRX for awhile, and i love it. it sounds incredible and is extremely comfortable. sure, there are probably better basses out there, but i see Ibanez as a great value for the money. I learned to play using one of the Ibanez Jumpstart packages, and it provided a solid foundation for me as a beginner.
Also, going and buying a Fender Jazz for your first bass is like getting an emag as your first paintball gun. I'm not saying theres anything wrong with it, just a comparison. lol.
I havn't played a P-bass and I'm not bashing anyone or anything, just saying that Ibanez makes great basses and packages for beginers. They are worth checking out.
Lots of good bands have started out as 16 year olds playing in a garage.Comment
