    Jeep Grand Cherokee

Are they good cars? My mom is thinking about getting a 2k3 laredo and from what I have been reading it seems like they have some problems, but it's hard to tell if these are problems with all of the jeeps or just a few cases. If it isn't a great car, then what is a recommendable suv for under 20k$?

They are great SUVs! I loved mine. I just had to get rid of it for something bigger. Jeep unfortunatly does not make anything larger then the Grand Cherokee.

Grand Cherokees rock in snow to boot!

    Good luck and enjoy!

That's good, the main reason she wants to get it is for when we go skiing and go up to the mountains, and other then that I will be using it mostly to go to school, so space isn't really an issue.

I have one. The I6 motors like to eat cats, or atleast the older ones did. 111,000 miles of abuse, it was used for towing and offroading and the tranny was on its way out. Leak from the rear main oil seal. My front end is screwed up but ill blame that on an accident rather than the car itself. Other than that its been great. I beat the hell out of it offroad, and it never complained. I would go for the 6 over the 8, plenty of power and better gas milage than the 8.

Forgot, my mothers boyfriend got a new one a few months ago (mine is a 96). No problems with it yet, and its had the hell beat out of it a couple times.

I would get the original Cherokee over the Grand, its more durable.

I doubt it, alot of ppl at my school are into that sort of thing and will laugh at you for getting a grand cherokee over the original. Many ppl still have Cherokees from the early 90s that havent had problems.

Dont get me wrong I dont have anything against Grand Cherokees but if your into mudding and that sorta thing the Cherokee would be the better choice.

A grand cherokee is basically a luxery cherokee. I think in there old age the grand cherokees develop more electonic problems than the cherokee due to having more options. Offroad they are pretty close, although the grand cherokee is obvously heavier, doesn't offer a manual transmission, and offers the 8.

Why is the cherokee so much better for mudding? I know somsone with an original cherokee 220k on it, no major work.

That's great, but I am not interested in them. As for durability, it isn't that much of an issue as it won't be used for any serious offroading.

the grand cherokee is made for a smoother ride then the cherokee. IF you look under the rear fenders of these two you'll see the cherokee has leaf springs and the grand cherokee has 4 wheel independant suspension. What's the difference? leaf springs = rougher ride...like a truck
independant suspension = smoother ride, more things to go wrong

Jeeps are truly some of the last true sport utility vehicles out there. While the cherokee has a sturdier design both can be taken off road with easy. The one that I'm mostly worried about is the liberty... so far it seems to be the weakest link, but that's just from what I read about it, so you descide for yourself. Either way the liberty is the uglyest suv right after the aztek by pontiac.

for more questions and answer I would recomend you check out the Jeep Forums.
