i have an 80gb maxtor and it just took me 4 hours...sigh! what about everyone else? (trying to discover normality)

My 80gb takes forever too. Yours sounds about right. I just do it at night before hitting the sack. Make sure to to a complete error scan first and turn off your screensaver.

Its one of those things that depends alot on the setup. I think it takes about 20 min for my 40gig IDE array to defrag. But its NTFS and running on a pretty decent controler. 4 Hours does not sound out of order on a FAT32 drive howeverSig image must be under 20kComment

dear god it shouldn't take you more than an hour or two if you defrag it often which you should...you should have it at about 5% fragmentated when you do, do it. It took me 12 hours since mine was 40% fragemntated

I run various *nix's at home (Solaris 9, Red Hat, OpenBSD, etc) ... dont need to defrag :)

No you shouldnt defrag any Unix install. The way the filesystem works is actually designed to eliminate most fragmentation issues ...
Defrag the hard disk can actually lead to allot of problems should power fail or what.
The are several good docs on ext2, ext3, reiser, and JFS that go into allot of detail that I do not have time to type out here.

About 15-20 minutes.
I have 2 60gig 7200rpm HDs on a RIAD 0, I have about 16gigs used. I defrag every 2 weeks or so.Comment
