I saw this movie with a friend who is half Japanese and spent a few years over there. He said that for the most part, it was historically accurate. The only parts he thought were rediculous were the emperor's speach and the ninjas.

According to him, the Emperor's Japanese was equivellant to a 3-Toothed Hick saying "How 'yall doin now?" and not the eloquent Abe Lincoln it should have been. His japanese was of a total commoner.

...and remember, the Emperor was supposed to be a living god who's line was unbroken for hundreds of years.

Secondly, Ninjas should have been extinct by that time. Katsumura's Character was a Dai...something. A Samurai Leader. Ninjas were employed by the samurai leaders as spys and such who would carry out assasinations and such, and would never have attacked in such large numbers as in the movie. Honestly, I thought it was kinda rediculous as well.

Where the ninjas came from is also kinda shady. You don't just 'Hire' ninjas. The Japanese fat cat, Omura, wouldn't have been able to just go and wave around some cash and conjure up a squad of ninjas, again, assuming they were not extinct by that time. Ninjas were loyal to their leaders.

most of this info comming from my 1/2 Japanese friend.

The movie was good, nontheless, although my buddie's groanings when Tom gives whatsherface "the look" was annoying . Apparantly to marry or have a relationship of that sort with a white man was ultra-taboo.

          "Daimyo"

If they had done the right thing, TC's character would never have been in a position to put the moves on Katsumura's sister. I agree, though, that a relationship is pretty unbelievable from a socio-historical point of view. He was a gaijin (foreign devil), a ronin (masterless warrior) who had killed her husband, and then failed to kill himself after leading her brother to his death.

Agreed. And it's a good movie, overall. I just thought the happy ending was forced.
