    What are Movie Sudios thinking?

    I've been reading about Von Helsig, the new Vampire hunter movie starring Hugh Jackman. They're apparently spending $150 million on this thing. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see it. But what makes the studio think that's a good number to be sending? There have only been 51 movies in the US to break the $200 million mark. Just 51! And, don't forget, the studio doesn't see all that gross, they only get a percentage (abotu 70% if memory serves). Even if this movie is the 52nd film to get $200 million they still don't break even. It's unbelievable.

    (to be fair, I'm ignoring international sales as I really don't know how that contributes to the studio's pocket, meaning I don't know how those deals are structured)

      Is that $200 million only the theatrical release?

      Studios make a lot more licensing the rights for video games, fast-food promotions, DVD sales, TV releases, toys, etc. Maybe they hope to bank more on tie-ins?

          US theatre money is only a portion of the much larger whole. They rake in the dough when all is said and done, don't worry about the movie studios

              Bah....if they kill the vampire movie market they won't make another Underworld. I REALLY want to see Kate Beckinsale in more tight leather too....

                          North America isn't the only theatre market, but I think it is the most lucrative.

                          Most studios spend an additional 40-50% above production costs for advertising and promotion, too. Which means Van Helsing will have to gross (at 70%) $300M to break even.

                              Yeah but you have to expect a video game tie in on all 3 major consoles and action figures at a minimum.

                              BTW, I agree and I can only hope that underworld 2 will have a gratuitus all female vampire nude oil wrestling scene....

                                                      Don't forget it's more than just US theatre release. You have international though not as big it's still a nice chunk of change. You also have DVD/Video sales and merchandising.

                                                      Even those movies that flop at the box office still make money.

                                                      You know Glitter and Gigli still made alot of money. They play Glitter all the time on cable and people will rent or buy the Gigli DVD just to see how bad it really is.
