Judaism is really only a religion...and you could even call it a culture. But it is not a race.
Ethiopian Jews, Semitic Jews, and European Jews, are all considered Jewish, yet they are different races. They only thing they share is a common religion. e.g. European/Russian Jews descended from Central Asia, they have no genetic tie to the middle east, like the Semitic Jews do.

Not too suprising really and not out of character with the "old South" that was still hangin on by a thread then. Certainly not at all. Remember he was a bachelor for many years. He married late in life to a woman much his junior in age. later divorced. But he was not celebate. And in them days having a black mistress was fairly common among the well to do. So many times not only in the South it was common back even before his times. He was a Dinosaur really even then though. Remember this was like 80 years ago! Seems he had a good relationship with this woman, but even if he was in love with the woman, she being black and him white they could not have gotten married. Oh no. Not then and here. And it was understood in those days that a White man might take a mistress and of course a black one might be the case. No one talked about it. Everyone looked the other way. It certainly would not have disrupted his career to have had one. Nowadays it might. But to acknowledge it publicly and even to go so far as marry her would have ruined him. To his credit he did indeed support her. And provided for her after his death. Not too many white men with mixed race children did that. Strom was a political chameleon. He could change his position to fit the times. He showed that many times. A rare thing really. He switched his stand publicly but privately he always respected and did favors for African Americans. He strangely enough has many Black supporters for this reason. Even today after his death. He was a really odd phenomenon. Hard to get a grasp on.

In fact he was not really all that racist. He might have acted the part when need be and the times where right but privately he was not.

I found it hard to believe... but then have seen independent evidence it seems to be that case. At least partly. I said it was odd. I didn't say it was easy to understand. And perhaps it's not the same as we would always think it was. Very wierd really.

You have to remember that what is shown as his publicly racist period was long ago and in the spirit of the time and place and to get elected. After he saw that was no longer the way to go he became quite the champion of civil rights. He has a very strange path he followed. Hardly easy to believe he could have done so with some inner hatred. I know...It's very difficult to decipher. I not sure of it at all.

Well there is no pidgeon holing this guy.

Here are some strange facts. Now remember he would have been in his early 20's when he had this affair with a Maid of the family household. He did not marry until much later in life. And then of course he launched into his openly segregationist part of his career about this time. But you would have to in order to get elected here in them days. But in spite of that he continued to openly see his daughter and never confirmed nor denied her lineage. He supported her throughout her life and even stayed in constant contact with her. He and she would speak often. Her often chastising him for his views. He put her through college and visited her there openly arriving in the Governers limo on the Campus. She attended South Carolina State (formerly a Black college and was certainly back then). He would say things to reporters like "when one brings a child into this world they should take care of that child". Or if asked if she was his daughter he might reply "I have lived a fullfilling life". He might as well have acknowledged it. But he never would actually say it. People that intended to use it against him were pretty much stymied by his open expression of admittance by action and deeds not words. Its long been assumed she was his daughter. And she herself never would acknowlege it publicly. It is also felt that she was the reason for his ferverent work to assist the black community after it became politicaly expedient to do so. And she often was the person people approached to ask him to get involved in black community issues. And he did so. And now when she has come out about it the Thurmond family, that has always known, immediately acknowledged that she was.

And after a while when it became politicaly improper to be a segregationist he switched his public stance and became a champion of Civil rights! Almost overly so. You can ask many Blacks in SC and they will tell you all the things he as done for them. They forgave and forgot mostly. Because he was in such a position of power to aid them he could. Now this would not be the first politician that chose a path that was politicaly expedient. But he may be the most successfull at doing so. And then he reinvented himself when it went the other way which is the really miraculous thing. I think that he is the most successfull example of a complete flip flop I ever saw. And if he truely had hate in his heart and was a TRUE racists I do not think he could have gotten away with it. Or been able to pull it off. It now appears his segregationist stance was more of an act than his later stance on civil rights.

Strange but seems to be the case!
