    learnin' the Gih-tar!

hey yall, just got home from college and have a WHOLE MONTH of nothing to do (miss school already ) anyway, my bday and christmas are in the same week, so i cashed in and made my mom buy me a new alvarez acoustic/electric (y'know, gonna rock it like tenacious d). however, before rocking like JB i gotta..uh, you know, learn. Right now I'm just messin around with some 311 and nirvana tabs, don't feel like learning correctly with chords and stuff just yet..anyone have any easy song suggestions that are fun and easy to learn?

Kyle Quit the Band by the D is pretty easy. Even the solo. I checked harmony-central.com, and it wasn't there, so just search google for it, it's too late already and I'm going to bed. I just finished and emailed an essay due last Thursday at midnight. I guess I'm really on vacation now, yay. any blink 182 and green day is easy. wel most, at least. Also, the outkast song "hey ya" is easy.

Edit: www.mxtabs.net and www.tabcrawler.com i have found to be the best for tabs.

if it's your first and you do not have a lot of cash to spend look on musicians friend for the squier(sp?) bullet. It seems like most people I know start out with that one.

Learn Led Zeppelin-Stairway To Heaven. It'll be challenging at first but once you get the hang of it, its pretty easy.

Allmost all Country music can be simplified down into three cords. As far as Chords go, learn them the right way first. Then learn variations of them after your proficient. Learn the main cords of A, Am, C, D, E and F and you can do a good number of songs. Start with A,C,D and F and then add one a week after you get to where you can smoothly transition to those without looking and do so automatically. When you get to where they come naturaly and you can play a while without your fingers blistering and you got some caluses built up then you can add some bar chords and more Minor chords. Go get a simple starter book and work with those three and four chord songs first. You may not like the music that much but what your doing is training your fingers and mind. You got a put in the effort a bit.

Look for a Martin DR series Guitar for a real nice starter guitar. Superior neck and a solid top as well. Nice straight and easy to fret necks. And about $450 for one with a hard shell case. Go too cheap and its gonna be hard to play and not have good tone. These little Martins beat anything I seen for set up right and easy to fret. I highly recomend these.

I reccommend learning chords first. It makes tabs a whole lot easier. If you see a chord in tablature you're going to be like WFT and not know how to play it.. but if you already know it.. 'Oh thats an F#m7'. Learn regular chords, do bar chords (take lots of practice but they are in alot of tabs), I guess you can play around with powerchords but a retarded monkey can play those so they arent that impressive. Then learn 1st position notes, 5th, 7th, 9th.. I just got done learning the movable scales.. heh they are a pain in the *** to learn because I already had 1st position embedded in my mind, then they tell me to learn another position.. wtf. Anyway, its usefull stuff, because the intro to stairway to heaven is in 5th position.. heh
Eh, sure you can play tabs. Anyone can play tabs. It's just better to develop technique first.

I find that one of the best albums to learn is Metallica - Metallica. Also referred to as The Black Album. Many of the songs on this CD are easy, but teach essential technique. Try Enter Sandman. It took me about a week to master the song, and now it sounds awesome.

On another topic, check out a program called Guitar Pro 4. It is a great program for learning guitar, as well as learning new songs.

Practicing chords can be fun! It helps build up your calouses (sp). I'm sure you can find a few songs that can help you practice chords, its not hard, really.
I suggest buying a guitar book and following the curriculum (sp). In my guitar class this past semester, we used a book called H.O.T. .. Hands On Training First year guitar by Nancy Lee Marsters (my guitar teacher, Mr. Walsh, is actually writing the third H.O.T., which I find really cool.)
The book teaches you all kinds of good stuff. It teaches you a crapload of chords, bar chords, 1st position, how to play bass, right hand technique, barre chords, and alot more. It taught me all I know how to do on guitar right now, excluding power chords.

You dont need the teachers manual or whatever, the student book has all you need. Just follow the instructions.

For example, the intro to both Wonderboy and Tribute can help you learn how to correctly use hammer ons and pull offs.

Depends on your skill level..but it's not the easiest 'tallica song to play, but also not the hardest...

                              2 Words.......Bar chords.

90% of everything on the radio can be played with 2-3 different bar chords and thier simple variants.

Sad but true,oh bring back to good old days......
