The ruger mini's are nice, great varmit rifle! The .223 rounds arent too expensive especially if you buy them surplus. I am currently in the market for one of those .17 Hornady rifles.Good luck with it..

my friend just ordered one of those .17's yesterday... he showed me a picture and it has this awesome looking barrel and synthetic stock (looks like a .223) with this tiney little hole in the end of the barrel. I cant wait till he lets me see it in person!

Ya they're something else, the bullets are tiney(yet verry expensive). My dad won a .17 pump awhile back, looks like a tiney 12 gauge! i still havent been able to shoot it yet..

anything by ruger is awesome. great quality and durability.

i have a 10/22 that i can't even begin to tell how many rounds i have through it and it's still in top shape.

the .223 is a great round. shoots very flat with decent mid range terminal velocity.

              Florida peeps...step up!!

What do you intend to use the rifle for? Hard to make a recommendation without that info.

I don't have any experience with the Mini-30, but if it is anything like the Mini-14 it is probably reliable, well built and not very accurate.

Mini-30 is chambered for the 7.62X39mm, NOT the .223. Hence the Mini-"30" name.

All Ruger mini's are not known for decent target accuracy (actually, no Ruger rifle is known for superb accuracy), although they can be made to be, with a new heavy barrel, tuned bolt, and bedded action. But all that can cost as much, and usually more, than the rifle did originally.

They DO shine as a pig gun though, since close range is the order of the day on the little stinkers. Remember too, the 7.62X39mm cartridge barely equals the old .30-30 until 100yds, then the .30-30 will easily surpass it in performance.

If you want a good target/hunting/plinking rifle that is cheap to feed, I suggest any of the AR-15 clones. Granted, they are more pricey than a Ruger, but their versatility is far better than a Mini. Not to mention there are about 80 Zillion different aftermarket parts and accessories for them.

I would recommend against it for targets or varmints. I would be surprised if it shot better than 3 or 4 inches at 100 yards.

Army is right, the AR15 style is very much superior and can be optioned up to be superbly accurate.

Actually, for targets or varmints you would be better off with a heavy barreled, bolt action .223 rifle.

Ya i just got done shooting my 22/250. Also i never knew that the mini 30's were chambered in the AK round? Ya the 7.62x39mm isnt the greates round, i'd try and stick with the .223/22-250 for varmits/target shooting.

ive shot the ruger mini-14 and there amazing. the one i shot was police-modifyied and it had like less recoil than a .22 if the 30 is anything like it it would be a great gun
