Good and cheap don't go in the same sentence...well not as far as computers are concerned..but to an answer.
I will get blasted for this......but what the hell, here goes
Buy a Mac! The reason is although you can throw loads of ram in a pc a pretty fast processors and supa dupa graphics cards the Macs are meant for graphics work and if anyone who has Photoshop has found if you buy a book or magazine it is the Mac instructions or screen shot that is used first, they handle graphic intensive work way better than a pc for the same like for like spec. I am a hardened PC user and when I had to use a Mac for graphics courses the first thing I did was make the Mac look like a pc screen wise but there is no getting away from the (to me) clunky way a Mac operates. It can't be denied that the Mac is THE tool for graphics...and it is to be honest passable for other stuff...I say passable as all this briefcase stuff for fonts etc really annoys me...and yes I do understand why the Mac does it
(To avoid wasting ram on fonts you "might" want to use). I know where I am with a PC but do realise that the Mac has the edge for what you are asking. Now all you have to do is find a cheap Mac...good hunting

How much are you looking to spend? For any type or graphics you will want a high quality monitor and for serious rendering you will want a high end video card like a 3D labs wildcat or an ati fire gl. Matrox also makes some good lower cost cards that are good for rendering. I'm not sure which type of chip is best to use, but an athlon 64 or pentium 4 xeon would probably be your best bet. If you are looking to buy a prebuilt system, silicon graphics inc. makes good workstations. www.sgi.comComment
