I might know a thing or two about it.

One clue, unfinished basement in MN here will stop fermentation real fast.
Otherwise I've done a batch of cider and am doing some beer when my buddy returns from Bosnia this spring.
Otherwise everything has to be clean and sanitized. Wine is also more forgiving than beer for transfering/bottling cleanly.

I used to brew beer, and this is some of what I learned:
- Keep everything really, really clean. And well-rinsed, as soap can kill your brew.
- Different types of sugar/sweetener will give you a very different taste on your beer, and more will up the alcohol content. Not too much more, as your bottles may pop their tops.
- Reasonably constant temperatures are important. Get a thermometer for the side of your brewing equipment, and find someplace in your house that has a constant warm temperature.
- Spigoted buckets are more convenient than siphoning. If you use two, and transfer your brew, it is easier to get a nice clear batch with no sediment.
- Be patient, & persistent.
- Don't drink while you are brewing!
