    Computer/Spill problem

well...i spilled gatorade on my computer, by accident. it turns on, and the screen doesnt work, but then the other day the screen worked normally, then flickered, then turned off..is there any chance of my computer being able to work without being tampered with? like will it just dry?

Where did the gatorade spill? If even one part is shorted it could cause the whole computer not to work, so you will have to test each part.

Around the escape key, around the arrow pad, and around the power button in the top right corner..

So it was just on the keyboard or also on the case? If it was on the case and just near the power button then some gatorade may have gotten into the pins that connect the power button to the mobo.

i was on the keyboard, then i guess some how it got inside wether through the power button or something else. what i want to know is will my computer be salvagable? and will i need to take it anywhere or fix it? a decent amount of gatorade got inside there, then i got alot off, and a little dripped out...if something shorted will it dry? or will i need to go in there?

this is also pretty bad, ive done this with another one of our computers a few years ago..o well i have to explain to my dad tonight on the phone

if some did get inside the case you will have to open it up to check which parts are salvagable. try replacing the keyboard first.

So it is a laptop then? You may just have to get a new computer then. If you can figure out what parts are damaged then call compaq and see if you can order new ones.

if it's a laptop, send it back to compaq if you can...my girlfriend's roommate spilled fruit punch on her laptop (twice), sent it back, and it's as good as new!

if it isn't a laptop...how did it spill onto the keyboard AND get inside the case...?

I have spilled all sorts of stuff on regular keyboards, I must have gone through like 4 or 5 keyboards in a year. Gotta be careful, its VERY hard to fix, and very sticky

Does it power on? Have you tried hooking a monitor to it? Considering that it's a laptop, having the mobo shorting out most likely be a costly one, money wise. It has to be sent back to Compaq/HP or local tech store for repairs. Either way, it will take some time to get fixed. The things that should be salvageable should be the HD and any PCMCIA cards. It's probably more cost effective to buy a new one, considering the value of your laptop and the cost of getting it repaired. You still can retrieve your data on the laptop HD by hooking it up to your regular PC with a converter cable. The laptop HD is still an IDE drive, just in a smaller package. Once you hook it up, copying it to your pc will be no problem. Provided that both the laptop and PC file system are the same, ie NTFS or FAT32. Hope this helps. LMK about the status of your laptop.

Another reason why desktops are better than laptops. My keyboard is indestructable. I have intentionalls poured drinks into it in the past to demonstrate this to people
