well..i've had this problem a while..but it's just an annoyance i guess...i often find say a folder called WINDOWS in my recycle bin...after i reboot it goes away...today i found documents and settings in a completely different folder (c:\downloads)....i dunno WHY this is happening. i have NO spyware and NO viruses on my computer...so wtf is the cause? this comp was built within the last 7 months...sooooooooo....i dunno, just an annoyance. but one that isn't explainable. ALSO, the weirdest one yet...sometimes when i'm opening something through a program, and i'm looking through the folders, i'll see odd looking files (named albumartblabla)..so i go to that folder outside of the program, and it isn't there (it's not even hidden..). so i'm at a loss...and it just angers me that these annoyances are happening.
ok...this is getting annoying..folders are moving themselves?

Still sounds like a virus or something. Maybe try another virus scanner and see if it picks up anything.
www.antivirus.com has a free online scan you can use. -

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!W95.Hybris.worm was found...now here's the catch. i JUST did a virus scan and it didn't find anything...after installing and running that free online virus scanner, both the online virus scanner AND norton find this worm. WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? why didn't norton find it BEFORE? norton has no way of dealing with it either...yay!Comment

Ahh yes I remember hybris.
I hope you eradicated it, update your norton definitions for sure.
As for it hanging it could be a number of things, a program that's slow to load for instance. If you have a LOT of programs in the task bar (by the clock) these take a while to load, since they all try to load at the same time).
Glad you found the virus.
Here's some additional writeup on the virus. http://securityresponse.symantec.com...bris.worm.html
You might want to look into that, it sounds like it comes back easily.. requires you to disable system restore on XP (where the virus might get backed up accidently by the restore system).. irradicate it etc etc.Comment

OK ..this is getting pretty serious. i did a system restore...and rescanned the harddrive. this time, the worm is in a DIFFERENT file..this time it's in C:\system volume information....last time it was infected in a few BS files. I THINK THE SITE YOU SENT ME PUTS WORMS ON THE USER'S COMPUTER SO IT PROVES THE VIRUS SCANNER WORKS. THIS IS NOT GOOD, especially because i have no way of fixing this. why? because there IS NO folder named C:\system volume information..if there IS, it isn't hidden and it isn't normal...so i have no idea how to access it anyway. I HATE COMPUTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Comment

It's hidden, and it is normal. That's your restore information.
The site I gave you does NOT give you viruses, it's a reputable software maker. I haev used that online scan for years and suggest it to many of my clients.
You should have NOT done a restore, the restore rolls back to when you had the virus... you need to turn OFF system restore, completely eradicate the virus and then turn on system restore again. You may also want to tell system restore to delete ALL old save points.Comment

the thing is, mindflux, norton picks up no viruses whatsoever...that is, until i install the free virus scanner you sent me a link to. then it finds a virus. could it be that the stuff you download for the scanner (purposely or not) contains a VIRUS? i'm gonna try avast, i know that's free and reliable...see if it picks up anything..Comment

I doubt it, sincerely do. Hybris has been around for a long time now. It's easily detectable too. I say something is wrong with your norton. I've never had good luck with it.
You may want to try www.grisoft.com too, they have a free virus scanner that my dad uses with good luck.Comment

You are putting too much effort and stress on yourself to get ride of a virus. Just save everything that you want to keep, (ie: financial info, pictures, emails and email addys, etc), format the hard drive and then reload windows back on. Sometimes that is just the easiest thing to do.ummmmmmmmmmmmmComment

yup, i did that...only i did it without saving anythingOriginally posted by Emily

Well think about it...you not only get rid of the virus you also get rid of the numerous amounts of files that you've deleted that was saved else where. It totally cleans up everything with little work and stress.
