Why can't normal users see IPs?

It would be very useful if normal users could see the ip addresses of users here on AO.

Any chance of getting access to this turned on?

Does anyone else think this would be nice to have?

      Well tell me something...

Down in the right hand bottom corner of the post screen can you see "IP:logged" right after the "report this post to a moderator"?

Yeah...but if I click on it, it's almost like I need admin priviledges to see it.

                    Mmmmm,

I don't know if it applies everywhere, but I think you only have access to IPs that you access or are accessing you.The web address can often be tracked to the IP address using tracking software buts it's not always 100% accurate. My firewall has tracking software and gives me the IP of the sites I access and of any site the tries to access me,which happens ALL the time and most people have NO idea. You'd be AMAZED at the attempts that are made while your logged on or if your on a network such as Broadband. Most are not of evil intent but still.

A good Firewall is the bomb baby!

                    Jay.

I'd kind of like to keep it private what IP's I'm on. However, if you put an image in your sig on your server, you should be able to set up some sort of tracking device for all the IPs that view it

Thats exactly what I was trying to find out. Because I can log out and try in and it pops up wanting me to register. Since I have no other alias I could not see it without privelages automatically being loaded when I logged in. So I am not sure what you see or not. Or what you get when you access the board. I see things you do not see. And in some cases I am not sure which you do and which you do not.

However....without me going in and searching the V Bulletin software set up I could conclude that "IF" you can see it (that hot link) and then are denied access after you clicked it, then its a feature that CAN be turned on or off. But I am not sure it can be turned on for everyone at this point. It probably can since you can see the option but it also might be that its a non selectable level in security in the defaults. I would have to do some searching to find out for certain. If you could not see it at all I would guess it most probably could not be turned on. Thats what I was wondering without having to search through the V Bulletin set up to see. I am just guessing but now I would guess that it is possible. However not nessicarily advisable to do so as some have pointed out.
