    quick questions on networks

ok i just set up a network between two computers in my home.
the internet goes to the router, witch is connected to both computers.
well i just made it so they share eachothers hard drives, but now im wondering is that safe? i know it wont be a problem from one computer to the other, but will it make it easier for hackers to break into one? thanks!

As long as you have a firewall protecting the computers, it shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't worry about hackers too much. It's not like they go around and try and attack random IP addresses. they usually gor for a target they have chosen.

However, if some hacker did want to get to your computer and does, he/she would probably have access to both.

just make sure you set the hard drives to "read only" in the network properties. that way they cant upload anything, and they cant take anything off, and they cant change anything. all they can do is look.

There is nothing horable wrong with that setup provided you are not storing sensitive info on any unrestricted areas. What I would recomend is just sharing a "Shared" folder on each box rahter than just out and out sharing the entire drive. This way your important stuff is not readaly avail.. but when you do want to share files you can.

Your router is probably a firewall also. There are exploits for a lot of these home type units. Best thing you can do is make sure your firmware on your router is current, router properly configured and then turn off all windows boxs connected. Also visit windows update and get all the security stuff..service packs and what not.

The only secure windows box is one that is powered off.

Shared folders or not if I wanted in your pc I dont care about your personal crap. I gonna launch a real attack on something else from your machine and cover my tracks.

          my 2 cents
