    what processor

im lookin to build a new system and plan to start soon, i am looking to get stuff that has a decent performance:cost ratio...i dont want outdated gear, but neither do i want to pay 8,000 for a vid card...

so yeah i was woundering why are the celeron chips so looked down apon, their stats seem to compare nicly to athalon chips but for some reason people dig the more expensive athalon chips....

If I remember correctly, Celerons are frowned upon because the on-chip cash is significantly less than the P4.. Might even be made on a large die as well, not sure though..

But with the chips you've got listed, I'm telling you the Athlon will run circles around the P4, no if's, and's or but's about it.

I've got a 1700XP & my dad has a P4 2.4...all things being equal (RAM, vid, etc) mine absolutely ran circles around his, and the thing only runs at 1.47GHZ...Stuck some more RAM (Gig Kingston 3200 ) & couple other things and now it's nowhere remotely near a contest...

So yeah, got with the Athlon man, you'll love it

You say you don't want outdated gear...well the XP2700 is being dropped from the product line so you are buying a clearence item better served going with a XP3000

i dont really consider a 2 ghz processor chip outdated....
          i consider the P3 930 i currently have outdated...

if it was a car i would be worried about it being discontinued because parts would be hard to find...but as its a processor and i am not worried about support for the XP series drying up over the next 5 years its all good.

If i get the chip on clearance or whatever thats a 2x bonus to me....

i am unsure on the P4 because i want board and chip for around 150-180

Good place to find combo deals, but be *very* careful you read all the fine print, etc..Not all of the sights they list are very friendly or truthful..Don't go w/ an off-brand mobo, they tend to suck pretty hard...Another I'm not totally sure on here, but I think a lot of the newer MB's only support DDRRAM, so you'll have to take that into account when you upgrade

                Go for the Athlon.

                You spelled "Athlon" wrong BTW.

Athlon or P4, no celeron for reasons described above.

                  I'm a P4 guy myself.

Athlon, i have an XP2000+ and even with the palimino core(very hot) it runs very smoothely and i never have problems with it. The XP2700 is a barton core i think, so it's a lot cooler and will run even better and faster rates. Good for over clocking too!

cphil: you know where i can get that set uo for my price range?? if so than thanks; if not.......yeah.

and yeah i spell alot of things wrong, its like my unoffical hobbie....and think, im only a semister away from having my own classroom of high school students

Athlon is ahead in recomendations, P4 ahead in votes...what an odd situation...

i have heard people claim with Athlons raw clock speed alone isnt the best way to measure preformance, but the P4 has a faster bus speed and clock rate. What would make the Athlon the better chip (besides the price, which has about made the choice for me. Is there some voodoo majic involved like with closed bolt distance/accuracy? or is there truly some aspect of processor preformance that is not taken into account by advertised clock speeds??

Get any AMD processor with the 512K L2 cache. You can get them as low as XP2500+, but make sure you've got the higher cache. They're very easily overclocked to XP3200+ levels, and it's not too much work to stabilize them beyond that.

You will probably find that this differnce in votes and reccomedations is due to lazyness on the people who are reading this and there are more Athlon chips used by people who build their PC's than P4's..sure people do build their PC's with P4's but most use Athlons. you can over clock an Athlon with relative ease where as a P4 is pretty much stuck where it is...I know you can overclock a P4 but it isn't done simply or often. when the Intel v AMD wars were first started it was said at the time that the AMD was a gaming chip and the Intel was a biz chip...not true but made for good column inches.
I have used Intel (regular) and Celeron chips and Cyrix and of course AMD and the most stable ones have all been AMD and other than stretching the applications applied to the chip I haven't overclocked a thing.
My personal machines specs are painful when compared to some of the machines described on these boards and I have built for others, machines that are far superior to my setup but overall my machine is fine for now...actually this is the longest I have stuck with one PC before looking to upgrade it.
Low Budgets and building PC's are a strange combination, I know we would all like to throw several thousands of $'s at a machine but then do you really need to as afterall it is just a box that unless you are in some group that is into a dicksize bragging contest.... As long as it works that is all you need to worry about...we wouldn't build a car the way we build PC's, if we did then the roads would be a helluva lot more empty.
