I beg to differ on the overclocking issue with P4 and Athlon. I myself am a P4 fan, when i built this comp over 3 years ago i put in a 1.6. I've had it overclocked for over 3 years to 1.8 and had NO problems whatsoever. Ease of overclocking a P4 is possibly easier than overclocking an Athlon plus if Overclocking is an issue i'd definately go with P4. The older athlons(do not know about the newer ones) would literally melt if overclocked too high. We used to do this in my A+ class for fun. The P4 will shut itself off to prevent any damage to the chip in an occurance of overheating.
BUT if overclocking isn't going to be an issue, the Athlons are great processors and paired with good ram can do great things.

I would look for benchmark performance of these chips.

MHZ dosent really indicate proceesing speed if you compare between chip classes. For example: The Pentium M 1.5ghz is just as fast on many performance parameters as the P4 2.4 ghz. It makes up its 1 ghz difrence by other means.

AMD chips also tend to be a bit faster for its given MHZ.

I run an amd 2700+ and I'm clocking it at the xp3200+ level right now. It's had no overheating issues except in the summer... where my room reaches 100 degrees due to the lack of AC or good insulation or whatever. I think I solved that problem though... (opened the case, opened the window, got a fan and attached it to the side of the computer, )

To answer the question about uhh..crap, I forgot..just listen

AMD's naming convention is meant to be a comparison to the "Equal" Intel chip..ie, Athlon 1700XP is equivalent to a 1.7GHZ P4, even though it runs at 1.47GHZ... Don't particularly remember what it is they do to get to that equivalence thing, so ya know..

Also, clock speed is becoming evermore the myth..Meaning, that's not all there is to it anymore..Which is much of why AMD's is pwning Intel at the moment

            Gooooo AMD!

Im 95% sure im gonna get a XP 2800, and the Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MOBO, its not nearly as budget as i origionally wanted but yeah...its better than regretting going cheap a year from now....i may go with the cheaper Asus A7N8X, because im not sure the extra featured of the deluxe will do me any real good and one should be just as quick as the other right??

Should be, just double check the specs..they're not always the same..(sans features, of-course)
