    dvd-r/cd-rw/dvd-rom

ok..i am planning on getting a dvd burner SOMETIME in the near future...i can't have all three (dvdrom, dvdburner, cd burner) b/c i have two hard drives (no free IDE). so...would just having the dvd burner and cd burner work? anyone know? if so, would it be efficient/would it perform well/etc?

Sure? 'cos I know of people who bought combo drives as they said dvd/cd on them and thought they had a burner or do you mean a DVD with a CD burner as they are about but not afaik and burner and a cd burner.

In answer to the question of the thread.
get a DVDr/cd burner and a DVD burner, the combo drive will act as your regular drive.

My drive burns dvd-r/rw's, dvd+r/rw's, and cd-r/rw's. I also have a cd-r/rw drive but may take that out to put in three HD's.

Just about all DVD burners are also CD burners.

You could do what I did and buy a PCI card the has 2 IDE ports. This would add upto 4 extra drives. My setup is 80GB Boot drive(M) and Zip drive(S) on IDE 1 and DVD+/-RW drive(M) and CD-RW drive(S) on IDE 2. Then on PCI IDE 1 a 80GB HD(M). Soon, I'll probably add another HD.

I also have a FireWire 120GB HD so that I can share between my Apple laptop and PC desktop.

Yea this G5 I am using right now has the "Super Drive" in it. DVDR/W AND CDR/W all in one. I have only one drive bay at all in this thing.

Ok well it would seem that dual burners do exist (can't think they are particularly cheap though)..and I always thought they had a different type of laser for dvd burning compared to cd burning but then clever people those far eastern types.

Yea for direct from and to ones. But you don't have too. You can do burn to hard drive and then burn to disc... with only the one drive in there. If thats what you need to do.

hat cphillip said, I normally make a CD master of a CD I'm copying, and then burn it from the master.

And then I store the CD master on a 120gb Firewire harddrive for safe kepping.

I keep more used CD images on my ipod so I can burn them when I need them when I'm at a client location, without having to carry 20 cd's around.

And now, I can write off my ipod

Can a mac read a HD that is formatted for NTFS? I have about 50gb of video files I want to put on a friends mac and didn't want to have to burn that many dvd's.

Got a new DVD-ROM drive and DVD R/RW drive for Christmas (my old dvd-rom and cd-r drives were both failing....stupid old things)

Just because it says 'DVD' doesn't mean that's all it can play/burn. My DVD R/RW drive handles DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW media. Just depends on which one ya get=)
Don't think of it as being outnumbered, think of it as a wide target selection.
