That ball was an expansion chamber.
Keep in mind that this was back when it was not uncommon to see a mag with 5 or 6 loops of hose to help in expanding the Co2.
The ball was the tops of 2 12 oz Co2 bottle welded together with baffles and an internal pivoting shutoff. The idea was to keep Co2 from getting into the gun. It worked really well. I routinely played in very cold wet weather and never froze up.
Last time I brought that out to a field, the people filling my gun freaked out.minimag #1321
