i just woke up so i don't feel like reading all the posts...

technically speaking, i would think you don't have to be black to be african-american, if african-american indeed means you have direct lineage in africa. for instance, my girlfriend's father was born in egypt, and he isn't black. egypt is indeed in africa. so why wouldn't my girlfriend be eligible for this award, even if she isn't black? she IS an african-american, in the very literal meaning of the word.

eh..note: i just looked up the dictionary definition and it's: a black american of african ancestry.

there goes my theory...

Actually Virginia used to have "Lee-Jackson-king Day" but the Lee Jackson part of it has slowly dissapeared, in case you guys dont know what the Lee and Jackson means they were the Generals during the civil war (Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson).

Oh and the state worker's here in VA were off work both Friday and Monday for it this year!!????
