    Just Wondering...

Ok as I was filling up my tank of gas(and grumbling at the recent high prices) I wondered: exactly how much oil is on Earth and how long till we use it up? I was figuring there were alot of intellectual minds on AO or people who knew this stuff.

I remember hearing that it would be like 2070 or something like that.

But by then we will have alternate forms of energy

I plan on being dead by then so I don't care

There is also probably oil we don't know about yet, oil we arn't allowed to get at yet. But when we start to run out, of course noone is going to care about the nature preserves in alaska, they will be drilled. There is also oil we arn't extracting now because it would be too expensive. That will be used, but the price will increase. I think we take somthing like 50% of the oil from a well now because its too expensive to get more than that.

I remember hearing from a professor that we'll run out of oil within the next 60 years.

You know there is more oil under antartica than there is in the middle east right now. But we cant touch it for 40 more years, due to an international agreement that Antartica is 'no mans land' (no one can build on it, drill it, or whatever, but we can still have scientists down there) until the agreement expires. Then the fate of antartica could possibly change and we could go do stuff there or whatever. There is tons of resorces there.. uranium.. natural gas, ect I dunno heh
I dont know if these professor dudes realised this before they made their prediction of the world's blowing up due to lack of gas in 2070 or whatever.

            Diesel people...come on!

You can get more diesel from a barrel of crude oil than you can gasoline. Diesel has less of the harmfull accronyzisms(SP?) than gasoline. Diesel has more BTOs per part than gasoline. Diesel engines sound cooler than gasoline ones.

Diesel rules and everyone knows it.

okey pokey, heres what we do: when someone dies we eat them. OR we could run on electricity, but eventually all the energy in the universe will be heat and then we're done. kaput. we had a good run...
OR, OR we can all kill ourselves and avoid the impending doom that we all must ultimately face one day. i mean if we all just blow up the world problem solved right? right. im a genius. and they say "F" stands for Fail. It stands for "I've got a Future!" but you part out the I and G and A. If i learned anything last year in science (nothing this year sorry) its that you can always bend the rules and break the laws.

like they said not too long till all the oil we know of now runs out, but there is always more we never knew about, and they are constintly thinking of alternitive ways of energy, it is scary though to think that we might reck all we worked for because we used up all earth's sources, and it is sad to think that we call ourselves the smartest and most civilized animals in the world, when we have done more damage to it then all other animals put together, real smart eh and not to mention how we are sooo civilized yet between nuclear war, and all other forms of killing our own kind we kill each other 100x more than ne other animals

There's WAY more oil than the average consumer has any idea of.CSPAN was showing the pre? hearings, not to long ago,on oil company production and distribution and I was amazed to see that something like 75% of all oil mined and refined in the U.S gets exported ot other countries.Amazing if you ask me.Not only that, but they just recently approved another sector in AK for drilling.

They have everybody on a string believing we're WAY more dependant on imported oil they we are,by a long shot.Enough so to justify War and other such things.

                    Not nice at all.

Here is a cool site, I found it when I did a search for hybrid cars: www.hybridcars.com

                      Now this is interesting
Every time I squeeze that oil into my tank, I think about where it comes from and what it took to bring it here. I don't want to get into a political diatribe so I'll just mention a few facts and let you draw your own conclusions:
Persian Gulf countries account for 25 percent of U.S. oil imports, with Saudi Arabia providing 14.5 percent
Saddam Hussein's Iraq was the second largest source of oil in the Middle East, providing 600,000 barrels daily
An estimated one-third of America's $300 billion annual defense budget goes to ensure the transport of oil from the Persian Gulf

According to Environmental Attorney Robert F. Kennedy, Jr, senior counsel for the National Resources Defense Fund:

If we raise fuel efficiency standards in American cars by one mile per gallon, we would get more oil than would be in two arctic national wildlife refuges

Raise it by 2.7 miles a gallon to eliminate all the oil that we import from Iraq and Kuwait combined

Raise it by 7.6 mpg, we eliminate one-hundred percent of our gulf oil imports into this country
