Well spelling it dosent make but just sound it out. the * kindo of makes the samesound as the middle of the word. Just say it to yourslelf, and dont think about it in a spelling way.

Agreed it doesn't spell correctly but also when used as pronounced correctly it still doesn't work but the majority of people don't pronounce all of a word regardless of the letters so p8ntball does indeed work. Think how many american words are shortened versions of the original english, mis-pronounced as well, plus in fairness a lot of english words have strange ways of being pronounced despite the spelling.
American meanings for some words do have a lot of merit when compared with the original words so I am not on a hating trip. I agree with Trunk instead of Boot...but then I understand why the difference...doubt many do..(cue lots of "I do" posts
) Hood v Bonnet is even both have the same meaning and source. Sidewalk v Pavement, slightly in favour of the americanisem on that one. but to slew this back to topic...shortcut spelling in most all forms only succeeds in the dumbing down of the population, especially if punctuation isn't (see 
) used properly.
