Difference between a tux and suit?

ok, so im going to prom this year, and i want to buy a suit, but my date wants me to rent a tux! i dont want to spend $100+ to rent a tux for 1 night when i can buy a suit for less than $150 and have it for graduation etc... but my date is stuck on me wearing a tux, because she says it looks more formal. so i need to know, what are all the differences between a tux and a suit?

The buttons are material covered (sometimes) and a stripe down the leg and the lapels are shiney. If it is an older style then the lapels will be fringed with a braid of kinds...though that might still be the height of fashion in the states. Well at least that's how ours are. You might want to look for a hire shop that is selling off it's hire Tuxedo's as you can buy them for not a lot of difference from the hire cost, it isn't a problem about buying used clothes as if you hire then you are wearing a tux that someones else has already worn I do own many suits and 3 tuxedos, I actually own more wing collar shirts than regular shirts..that is something I think looks so wrong with a tux that the person wearing it has a regular shirt collar and then wears a bow tie sure you can get the regular collar shirts with fancy fronts but to me they still look wrong.

        fair enough.

        the real differences are

Tux: VERY comfortable pants + suspenders
        Suit: dress pants

        Tux: bow tie
        Suit: normal tie

Tux: some sort of ruffles, etc. on the white shirt
        Suit: normal button-down dress shirt

those are the main differences, tux jackets are usually far nicer than suit jackets. if i were you id wear a tux to your prom. most likely if you wear a suit youll be one of, if not the, only one not wearing a tux, and youll look like a boob. even worse your date will look bad too. just suck it up and wear a tux

A Tuxedo is far more formal than a suit.

You get married in a tuxedo, you go to court in a suit.

Wear a tux, I have never heard of anyone wearing a suit to prom.
I refuse to wear a bowtie though, I wear a regular tie, I also refused to wear the suspenders, not like anyone can tell if you have them on or not anyway with your jacket on.

Want one of the tuxes I have in my closet? I bet you could fit five of you in one of them . that, and i'm not giving them away

I love wearing a tux. I dart around every single corner with a finger gun and hum the james bond theme. It's great.

Plus, you get to wear a vest.

if you really think about it, if you take away the stripes down the sides, and the vest, its a suit. and a lot of people dont have the stripe or vest....but i dont really know. my sisters date wore a suit last year with a tie that match the color of her dress, and they made the front page of the newspaper for prom! coincidence that he was one of the few wearing a suit? i think not! lol

                            You know your right.

Why stop there? If you take away the smooth fabric and the long sleeves........

I think you should go in jeans and a t-shirt.

                            Jay.
