I'm taking lessons. I plan to go to college with a ROTC scholarship and major in aerospace engineering. Then I get to fly the really fun planes.

Learning to fly is definatly on my to do list someday. Its just way to expensive right now. If I ever had the money, I think it would be fun to fly a WWI era plane, I know being a passenger in one is a really differant feel than a closed cocpit small plate.

I finished my instrument rating last semester, commercial next, then multi, then CFI. Still need a few more semesters of other classes before I graduate with my bachlors.

After I graduate I plan to go straight into the military. There's often a gap of 1-3 years between graduation and getting a real job (the flight instructors around here earn awful pay, <15,000/year). The airforce can help me fill that gap, and pay me a reasonable sum. In theory, best case, I can go from flying in the airforce straight to the majors, and skip the commuters (whose pay can start pretty low). But even if things don't work out perfectly, I've always really wanted to join the military. And if they'll pay me to fly their jets around, I'll take it. It also gives me a backup if we get another 9/11, or massive airline bankruptcies.

I wish it was simplier, but there really seems to be as many ways to get into the majors as there are pilots. Some say the majors love people who've instructors for X years, others intern and hope to get in with a bare minimum of total and multi time (my former flight instructor did this), others swear by the military (another former flight instructor did this), since in the military you can get multi-engine jet time, which you cant even afford in the real world, and is what the major airlines fly, obviously.

The only things I've heard for sure that all the majors like are: zero criminal record (especially alcohol), perfect driving record, good grades, 4 year degree, lots of multiengine time (a few hundred hours). However you want to get those are up to you. Major in basket weaving, get your ratings on the side (which can be cheaper than at a university), and spend your own money (around $200/hour) building a few hundred hours of multi time. Or flight instruct for a while and get paid to fly (although its tough around here to get any multi time instructing), or join the military and let them pay you to earn multi time (with the obvious side-effect that you are in the military). Or, like one guy I know, have an uncle that owns a few corporate jets, and get a job with him right out of college.

Also no matter what you decide, there's multiple ways to go about it. For example if you want to join the military do you join the air national guard? Do you join right out of highschool, or wait until you graduate? How about AFROTC? Or the air force reserves?

If you are interested, my suggestion is to start flying at a part 141 school (many universities use this tougher standard, or at least more paper-work intensive standard ) and get your private. You may find its not for you, or more likely, you'll fall in love with it. Realize the financial cost involved. At a state school, I'll spend over $9,000/semester for tuition and flight fees when I'm flying (which is almost every semester). If the money isn't available, or you don't want to loan it (which I am doing a lot of), you may need to look at other ways of getting money (like the military).

While you are learning to fly, especially if you fly at a university, you'll meet people. A lot of them will be right out of college (exactly where you'll be in 4-5 years) and flight instructing. Some will be waiting to ship off to the military, many other students will be going through the various stages of flight training, or in he air guard, or reserves, or ROTC. Talk to all of them. Talk to the professors. Get numbers of friendly alumni pilots at the airlines. Talk to them. Everyone will have an opinion, everyone will have a way that it worked (or will work) for them.

Its not really as complicated as what I just typed, but you do have multiple ways of getting there (assuming your goal is a job with the major airlines), and each has its benefits.

I fly with my dad all the time. He just purchased a Skylane Turbo and gave his old Skylane (like a 77 or something) to my older brother (also a pilot).

Restola, thanks for all of the advice. I appreciate it a lot. I realize, that i dont really have a shot at the major airlines, like delta and us air, even with the connections i have. (headmasters colege romate is the union leader for delta, my cousin flies for delta etc) because most of the majors are only hiring pilots out of the airforce/navy now because of this 9/11 hooplah


what i plan to do, is go to college, and make flight my major, then i plan to use some other connections i have (headmasters bestfriend is a big wig at execujet) and hopefully fly small private jets all across the world.

I realize it is going to be very hard, and i will have alot to endure. the airforce and millitary is not for me, and i dont think i could ever cut it there. i may go into civil air defence after college, before a real job, but im better off doing it this way. Also, the millitary doesnt like taking up so many years to train a good pilot, just to loose them because their term is up.

i have a huge flying history in my family, as i said cousin flies for delta, and flew f14's before that, my uncle is a wwII and korean war pilot, flying vf54's. and my grandfather was a b17 repairman working on the bombdy bears in WWII.

ive always loved flying, and i go up with my neibor in his cessna centurion 2 all the time. I absolutely love it! I just hope i can make the cut. Restola, where are you currently enroled? Ntn? arent you in ohio state? ididnt know they had a flight program!

When/with which sqaudron did he serve? My great-uncle flew F86s during the Korean War and had 3 kills.
