    Tonsil Questions

Any advice from any parents out there on Tonsil removal surgery?

My oldest goes under the knife on Presidents day and we are trying to prepare him for it. The surgeon said the most common side effects are bleeding.

I had mine out when I was 17. What I can remember is, it hurt like hell. But my case was a bad one. We couldn't get the swelling down before my surgery. Make sure your child eats anything he/she wants because I didn't eat much and ended up throwing up due to the amount of med I had in me and not much food. I also had to drink from a straw for like a month. It was also difficult to talk. My voice was rusty sounding and I had to put my chin to my chest to be able to talk. Just tell your child it's gonna be like a really bad sore throat. Good Luck!

Actually it does alter the voice temporarily. Also the surgeon said that my son probably would not want Ice Cream for a few days after because of being to sensitive to cold.

Keep him hydrated afterwards. The nurse gave me a choice: popsicles or IV full of water....I chose the popsicles.

The best part is a few weeks after the surgery he'll experience the joy of coughing up bloody stitches.

They wouldn't take mine out!! Mine started acting up at the end of High School,'91, and they said that they need to be a pretty frequent problem before they remove them. I get a pretty good sore throat every year or so. Tell him good luck, buy him some PB stuff if he hangs tuff!!:)

When I had mine out the rule of thumb was 4 cases of strep in one year. For 2 yrs straight, I was on meds and they wouldn't take them out becasue we caught all but 3 before it turned into strep.

Don't call it an "operation" or a "surgery". Instead, call it a "procedure". It may sound dumb, but it calmed me down when I was in 7th grade and needed a pin put in my leg.

i was under the impression that that "procedure" was not done anymore. well 1de i dont know anyone that has had theirs removed so i dont have any advice on that front, but i know from having surgery on my shoulder a few years ago that if you keep things light and not-so-serious it works out better. i remember i was cracking jokes the whole time and everyone seemed to be more at ease, so depending on his age i would say keep things easy the day of. and whatever you do, dont let him see you or his mom being nervious despite the fact that im sure you both will be.

My 41 year old cousin just had his out. He was sore for a few days and then was back to normal.

As for calling it a procedure it is too late. The surgeon was describing it in front of him.

The rule of thumb to remove them now is 6 infections in six months. My son has now had 8 in six months.

I do have to thank a fellow AOer!
                          ALBINONEWT RULES!!!!!
I couldn't do PBX yesterday, but really want to shoot down there. Newt came up with a great idea. He challanged my 7 year old to a Swords vs. Paintball gun game. For anyone at AO SC you know what that means! My son will use my X-Mag to take on Newt and his squeege. He is so excited about playing his first "paintball" game that he isn't dwelling on the surgery.

                          Thanks Matt!!!!!!!

                            Scott,
Just saw this thread, I had mine removed 4 years ago, not fun but a great alternative to the Atkins Diet!! Lost 30lbs in 3 weeks!

Anyway, I used to have 3 or 4 bad cases of infected throat a year that would put me down for a week at a time. Since the "procedure" I have not had a sore throat. Lucky for your son they decided to take them out now, the later in life they take them the harder the recovery.
Plenty of fluids (gatorade) is about all you can do.

Get a second (medical) opinion on the necessity of the procedure.
