    Please help with webspace!!!!!!!

I have my webspace from my internet provider and I want to just put some pics on there so my family can see them.
    address: members.cox.net/jfarnsworth2/

I made a folder called Pictures...so that would go on the end of the previous address, but have been told in order for people to see the pics I need an index.html page inside of the pictures folder, I have no idea what that means or how to do it.
I just want a basic structure with the folder name and then the links for pics going down the page under the folder name(like you are searching the contents of the folder). I am sure everyone has seen this and knows what I am talking about.
Can someone please tell me exactly what I need to do to make this index so people can see my pics.
I can look individually at the pics if I put the exact name of the picture after the address, but that is stupid! Thank you so much!!!

I can probly put something together in php for you.. Chances are it wont look the same.. but will have the same basic idea and functionality. But I'm going paintballing tonight so earliest would be tomorow or the next day..

also for my own knowledge.. anyone know what was used to build that page that was shown in the example? (Not sure how they do it.. but I can easly make something to do the same thing)

if you just uplaod them to:
        members.cox.net/jfarnsworth2/Pictures

it will look just like that. That is the standard folder directory page when there is no index.html (et all) page within that directory. To do it like that, you do NOT need an index.html page.

If you want a more complicated gallery page, you will either need a static html page or you will need a php/cgi page to dynamically do it, but neither are nececssary

        Hope that helps

          temps,

its not an index page. it is the default page generated by the server when there is no index.html page within folder. If you have a website, and remove your index.xxx page, when you go to your site, it will look just like that, except with your files

            oops...pmag,

forgot one thing. it wont just show your pictures (.gif, .jpg, etc) it will show any files you place in that directory (word docs, html pages, .mov files, etc). However, you may need a plugin for it to pop up if it is not a picture. You can actually use the web space as a storage folder, which works nicely when using two comps.

heres the deal, I have pics on the Pictures folder in my wespace. But without an index.html page it says I do not have authorization to view files in that folder. What do I do?

do you know how to chmod a folder?

using your FTP program, chmod the pictures folder "777" or "-rwx-rwx-rwx" depending on the config of the FTP program. It may say "Permissions, CHMOD, Security" or sometihng like that. If you tell me what FTP program you're using, I can prolly help you more

if you are using WS_FTP, then here is a help page. CHMODing help is down at the bottom

in this case, you want to cmod the FOLDER (pictures/) 777

i had just downloaded cute ftp program. Was free! If you know anything that might work better let me know.
Also, when uploading, as the host name i use members.cox.net

then it asks for my username and pass, so that is how they end up in the jfarnsworth2 directory I think

i looked at the chmod for the pictures folder and it says should be able to read and execute all.

go there and it will say forbidden for some reason, it is not making an index file or something to look at

OK....i **think** i know what to do here...

your server has turned "directory browsing" off. I've done a little research on how to allow that. go into NotePad (or Wordpad, or for mac users, TextEdit) and save a file called ".htaccess" (just 'dot' 'htaccess' no 'dot txt' on the end, just '.htaccess"). In there on the first line type:
                          Options +Indexes
CASE SENSATIVE. save and upload into the pictures folder.

report back, and I'll continue working to see what I can do for you.

Ok I tried that, same thing...no permission. I was supposed to save that as a .txt file right?
Once I uploaded it to the folder it dissapeared, is that right?

no, there should be NO .txt on the end.... just ".htaccess" no prefix (as in "joe.htaccess" and no suffix as in ".htaccess.txt")

I'm working on it on my website...
