    DVD copying questions

First off, this is perfectly legal, I want to make backup copies of DVD's that I own because they have a habit of getting horibly scratched or disapearing from my dorm if the door gets left open. So I figure make copies, keep the copies at school and the originals at home.
Basically can I copy DVD's or do they have some sort of protection? And what will I need to do this, will a burner come with any software I need? I already have a DVD player cd drive.

you'll need something like x-dvd or whatever it's called that's sold in stores. it allows you to make complete backups of dvds onto dvd-r if I remember correctly.

Pyro, you might want to talk to RamboPreacher about this, as I know that he does this sort of thing as well, and thus would be a better source of information.

        agreed i love this program
it also allows you to compress your entire movie/extra features onto one disk, or you can copy just the movie.

its simple, easy to use. only two click and you made a backup.

forgot chances are your burner will not come with a program to make backups of movie disks since they are encrypted.

your dvd player cd drive will play the disk but you need a dvd burner to burn them
i would suggest spending the exta money and getting a
duel format one. so it will burn both +r/w and -r/w
i would go with atleast a 4x speed also.
          8x is top right now

If you don't already have one, you're gonna need a DVD Burner. TDK makes a nice dual format 8x burner.

Then you're gonna want to get DVD X Copy. If youdon' have the cash for DVD X Copy here are some free tools that you an use.

Most DVD's are protected by a content scrambling system (CSS), there are many programs that can descramble it. DVD X-Copy is nice but there are freeware tools that can do just about the same things. Look at http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdbackup-guides.htm for a few different ways to do this. I have a plextor 8x dual format and highly recommend it if you can afford it.

the thing i like about dvdxcopy is that its only two clicks and you made a back up
                  its pretty much stupid proof.
others you have to select files and have many other steps which effects my tv time

Yeah, selling bootlegs will land you in prison ...

However, I think it's perfectly logical for you to want to keep off-site backups of your discs. So how about you store a set of them at my house? I'll send you, say, $8 per DVD to cover the shipping charges for me to store your backups? I'll verify the backups are good for you at no extra charge.

                        j/k
