wow....spraying mango sounds like a health teacher that is very good advice.
and remember to go to bed on a regular schedule. don't go to bed at 9 one night and midnight another. it actually really helps to go to bed at a consistent time where you are getting enough sleep.
but it looks like they've covered everything.

I'll disagree with you on this one (at least in keeping with the theme of staying hydrated). Caffeine is a diuretic, so it's GREAT at drawing water out of the body.

I will also disagree with 'Mango on the use of soy protein. Whey protein is far superior to soy. Soy protein is almost worthless from a protein/amino acid standpoint when compared to whey. Granted, I don't know the specifics of Silk, but I do know that you're making a big mistake if you count on soy for your protein intake.

Try to eat chicken. It's a very lean, low calorie source of protein and I would hope your average college dining hall regularly serves it. Ounce for ounce, chicken is probably one of the best foods you can eat. And suck it up: EAT FRUIT! Good source of natural sugars, vitamins, and minerals. Bananas are a great source of good carbohydrates and potassium. Even if you don't like them, you can eat one in a few seconds. Hold your nose if you have to.

          just clarifying:
silk soy is milk for lactose intolerant people. it isn't a protein supplement. he wasn't suggesting using silk soy as a protein supplement, but as a source of minerals and vitamins.

and i've been eating chicken as much as possible hehe.

mango- do you suggest using silk soy over regular milk all the time?

            FDA Soy research

Hi, perhaps you are thinking of something else when you say that Soy protien is "worthless from a protein/amino acid standpoint." Read the above link from the FDA.

Soy protein is a COMPLETE protein, meaning it contains ALL 8 of the essential amino acids that the body cannot produce! Soy is an amazing food, it can be used in solid foods, liquid foods, as a cereal, as a snack (in the form of nuts) and it also has MANY antioxident, cholesterol lowering and helps reduce your risk to MANY diseases such as hypertension, Coronary Heart disease, prostate and colon cancer, etc.

Recent studies have shown that Whey protein can have similar effects on the body but this research is still being tested. Some highly processed Wheys might have some of thier beneficial properties removed and so they are not all created equal.

And no I was not recommending he totally stop any Whey supplementation. While I myself don't believe people should bother supplementing all of that protein (supplementing is just that, making up for a deficiency, I encourage people to get thier macronutrients from REAL food if at all possible), and WAY too much emphasis is placed on dumping protien into the body (carbohydrates are just as if not more important than protien), I was just stating that Soy protein in the form of the Silk drink was a GREAT way to get protien, vitamins, minerals and all of the antioxident and cholesterol lowering health benefits of soy.

impostal: I don't recommend Silk Soy over regular milk all the time because of the calcium content in regular milk. Cows milk is almost a complete protein/amino acid source as well, plus it contains all of that natural calcium. Silk Soy does produce a soy milk that is enhanced (meaning they added things because it does not naturally occure) with calcium and omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidents. That is like the super soy milk of all soy milks, and I drink that (2 glasses a day). But if you are not lactose intolerant, then sure stick with the regular milk. I also drink 1 glass of regular milk a day. Just for good measure.

Actually water is the best rehydration drink of all, but what do I know

Of the two: Powerade and Gatorade, Powerade is best. Why? It's quite simple:

Average serving of Gatorade has 110mg of Sodium, WAY more than you need during a regular excercise bout. Powerade has 55mg, still a lot but it is much better for you. The more sodium in the drink, the thirstier you become! And these drinks are supposed to "rehydrate" you? Sure they cause osmoisis in the body cells, causing them to go hypotonic and absorb water, but so does WATER. And Water is FREE. Once you start excercising the body knows it needs more fluids so it will absorb water just like it absorbs these sports drinks.

Also, the average serving of Gatorade has 50 calories, Powerade 70 (more is better in this case). Plus Powerade is enhanced with a little bit of B vitamins, which are used in energy production and will help you a bit more in that department. Again, you dont really need these things for the average excerciser. The body stores enough electolytes to get you through the average 1 to 2 hour excercise routine 5 days a week. Good ol' H20 is all you need.

Sleep is the only time your body can repair the wear and tear done to it throughout the day so it is a crucial time when nutrient utilization is at it's peak. This is why it is so important to A.) Eat a nutritious diet that consists of all the major nutrients (protiens, carbs, fats, vitamins, minerals and water) and B.) to get proper sleep (about 8 hours) every night.

Now, keeping in mind what I said about this 8 hour fasting cycle while you slept, the MOST IMPORTANT MEAL of the day is breakfest. You must supply the body with the energy its going to use for the day. This is when you jump start your metabolism! You need to not only fuel your muscles but you must also fuel the mind with what IT needs to do its job. Ever think about the mind as a muscle? Well it is (not literally of course). The only fuel source the brain can use is sugar (glucose more specifically).

So lets say you get up, dont eat, and go to the gym. Your body is going to need a fuel source so guess what, it breaks down what carbs it had stored in the liver, then it uses muscle. The body does not like to breakdown your muscle for energy but it says "Hey! Fine, I'll use that!" and away it goes, converting your coveted amino acids and protien chains in your muscles into energy. It is easier to use muscle as an energy source as it is to use fat, even though fat has almost 4 times the energy locked away in its chemical bonds than amino acids do (which are the building blocks of protiens btw).

You felt sluggish for two simple reasons:

                  1. You were in a fasting state, even eating that little handful was not nearly enough. Your mind felt dull from lack of a proper energy source and your body had no fuel to use other than its own muscle.

                  2. Since this was your first time, devildog and big&slo are correct in saying your "not used to it." What they mean is the cells in your body are going to change and this takes time. Regular excercise for 3 to 5 days a week combined with proper nutrition will take about 2 to 4 weeks for the powerhouse cells in your body (the mitochondria) to adapt and multiply. These are what actually produce ATP and give your body the energy it needs to excercise (to basically live!).

Eating before excercise is CRUCIAL. You want to eat your breakfest (a good mix of carbs and protien) at least an hour before your excercise bout. How far would you expect your car to go on no gas? Sure it can roll downhill but thats it.

So in the end, excercising without eating does nothing in terms of fat loss. Total Myth Because like I said, your bodies next fuel source for energy would be your muscle tissue. Want to burn fat? Eat a good breakfest, and work at about 60% of your maximal heart rate for 45 minutes or so. This utilizes fat as the primary fuel source.

                  Hope this helps
I thought I was at home and not in honors biology... Nice post btw
