How to transfer files computer to computer?

I have the cables to do it... (Oh yea, btw, I am on my new secsay laptop now ^^)

But other than plugging the two computers together, is there anything I need to do? Like how would I access my desktops file to copy over this computer now?

    Thanks!

Right click on the driver or folder you want to share and hit properties
          sharing
          then share folder

then just go to my network places, and go into that folder then click and drag or however u want to do it.

Make sure you dont have regular eathernet cables. You need special 'crossover' cables to link two computers directly to eachother, or else they wont see eachother. You can get em at almost any computer hardware store (wallmart most likely wont have them. ) or if you know anything about cables you can crimp them yourself (but if you did, I wouldnt be saying this).
Regular cables are used if you are going through a hub or switch or router..
But yea the other guys pretty much explained it I think.

Ok. But also, one is running Windows 98.. so just clicking properties doesn't get you any shared folder options.

And.. yea I was trying the ethernet cables. I have another cable that I think will work. I'll try that. But I think I still need help on how to create sharing between the two computers. On which computer, should I do what?

its 300% easier if both comps are using the same os.

I have the same problem with sharing files on my win98 PC. Just copy the files from it directly onto the shared folder of the other PC and it should work.

                      A couple other ways.

Since I always keep all my documents in one file and all my Pictures in another and I back them up to a CD R.... I just would make a fresh back up CD and then pop that into the other computer

I never move programs over least they be corrupt. Always load fresh ones in the new computer. Just move Docs and Pictures is all.

Another way is to get a nice little USB or Firewire HD and use it to back up too and then move it from computer to computer. Or even an iPod will do this for you. Depening on what kind of device inputs you have determines what kind you need. Always handy to have a back up side saddle drive and periodically back up you documents files to it. In the case of this new G5 I have the whole OS and everything backed up to it. And then I still periodically make a CD of the Pictures and Documents. And I take those home and back up my lap top there. And keep the CD's in a safe place at home were there to be a fire destroy my office. Got lots of important things that I cannot lose.

AGD, where we are so good we can do it with only ONE tube!

i also find its easier especially when its two different operating systems to just make a cd-r or dvd-/+RW disk

I just figured screw it.. I'll just burn a few things over. The only thing that I really wanted to transfer was all my .. not so legal programs. All the photoshop and stuff. Can those be burnt to CD in their folder, and still work on a new computer?

The contextual "Sharing" menu in Explorer won't be available until you have enabled File and Printer Sharing and selected a valid workgroup name (use 9 alphanumeric characters or fewer, no spaces) for backwards compatibility.

On the Windows 98 comp, you'll need to either go to the Control Panel and open the Network properties, or right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop and select Properties. This will open a pop-up with a few tabs. Check the "Enable File and Printer Sharing" box. You might also want to check the Network Settings on both comps and verify they're using the same network name. Win 98 is done as above (second tab if memory serves correct), on Win XP right-click My Computer, Properties, select the Computer Name tab, then select the Change button next to "To rename this computer and join a domain ..."

Make certain both computers are using the same workgroup name, for example simply name it WORKGROUP. Do not use a domain, that won't work for your setup. Assign both PCs different computer names, and you should be set.

Once you make the changes to the Win98 comp, you'll need your Win98 CD to install updated files and have to reboot.

As mentioned by others, you'll need to either directly connect both PCs with a crossover cable, or you'll need to use two standard ethernet cables connected to a hub or switch.

If the two PCs can 'see' each other, they should both show up when you double click Network Neighborhood from either PC. It may take up to 5 minutes for all connected PCs to show up, so be patient.

And don't listen to these idiots telling you that both PCs should be the same OS, that is of no consequence. Basic file and printer sharing for small workgroup networks has been the same since the days of Windows 3.x (1991).
