Well this thread recalls an old one where we were talking about what we were reading at the time, and due in part to that thread I was getting into the Great War and other series by Harry Turtledove but I was missing a few in the series, I now have the lot except the latest book as it is only available as a hardback, anyhow back to the thread.
I have just as above said filled my shelf and in so doing picked up two books that are stand alone books.

Ruled Britainnia and Guns of the South
I have just finished the first and other than a dodgy edit in the second chapter that seems to have lost several pages ( the action suddenly jumps with no explaination ???)and the americanisms in some places (the book is written in correct english and a psuedo Olde Englishe) it is a damned good book. The subject is alternative history the sort of what would have happened if? In this case the Spanish Armada actually landed and took over England...a good read. An american is unlikely to see the americanisms but then being english they jump out from the page to me

The second Guns of the South is good so far...seems the Confederates in 1874 have met a mystery man who has for sale AK47's and are now about to overrun the North

1984 has been said above...mmm bit heavy but then I had to read it for school as well as Animal Farm, you need to read that first to see the parallels and properly understand 1984...written in 1948 actually, it was a future view not a definate date

Ah. You beat me too it. Its a great book. I loved the ending.
I really need to read that again.
Tom Clancy is always worth reading.
The Da Vinci (I love how no one can spell it right ) Code was a pretty good book, I guess. Once you start, you cant stop, but to be honest, I diddn't like it that much. A lot of the stuff in there is false, and its got a bad ending.
I used to like the wheel of time series. Those are good books (author: Robert Jordan) if you like fictional stuff.
After the 8th book, my brain couldn't hold anymore so I stopped.

Excellent books. Turtledove is very good at alternate history. Have you read "How Few Remain", the precursor to the Great War series?

I've read all the Tom Clancy books (except Red Rabbit), and most strongly recommend "Without Remorse". the best by far.

Anyone else notice that all the Clive Cussler books are the same? They all have:
                        (a) a globe-threatening crisis,
                        (b) an ancient mystery,
                        (c) a megalomaniac villian,
                        (d) a damsel in distress - who gets rescued by Dirk Pitt,
                        (e) an antique vehicle - which ends up in Pitt's collection

No not yet I picked up all the ones I was missing bar Victorious Opposition and How Few Remain when I went to Skyball, but one of the guys who went with me stayed on and went to the states and he has got How Few Remain for me...just waiting for the postman to deliver, then I can start reading the series...I will get VO but when it gets released in paperback...I wasn't gonna pay $28 cdn for a hardback even though it was a first edition with the rough cut pages. Return Engagments isn't out yet it would appear

geez me too. The 8th book of that series sucked, so I stopped reading it.
